I have an issue that i was hoping somebody could help me with. I have been running second life via my laptop for sometime now and its been going great, i recently purchased a PC as i needed it for work and i downloaded secondlife onto that.
The problem is that every minute or so the viewer will freeze and at the top it says not responding, the screen goes white and nothing works, after about 20 seconds it will all come back to normal without me shutting anything and then i have about another minute before it will do it again.
I check the Lag meter and all lights are green and for the minute that it does work everything loads fast and its great.
Does anybody have any ideas what might be causing this problem?
If you need me to past any details just say and i can do.
Thanks

May not have a solution, but recently experienced similar freeze ups under three different viewers: LL's, Cool Viewer, and Kirstens. By the time the viewer's crash they have sucked up over 5gigs of memory.
Having said that, I am using Windows 7, but so far SL is the only program demonstrating this quirk.
Life is good.

Still have problems, but they only showed up in the past day or two so have not had time to tinker. Use ctrl-alt-delete to bring up Windows Task Manager and click the Processes tab.

You don't need to stop any processes, but it will show you memory usage of the programs. There may be programs you can identify which don't need to be running, but unless you are familiar with the OS, I'd advise extreme caution in ending anyone particular program.

Ah right i see what you mean, on mine it gets up to around 300,000. It only freezes for about 30 seconds then it is all running again, very annoying.

From: Paracelsus Schonberg By the time the viewer's crash they have sucked up over 5gigs of memory. Never experienced this in any recent viewer. If it goes high it is perhaps 1GB at most. Should not eat all your memory. Might be some issue with Windows 7 but so far this is the first report of it. 300MB is a normal usage, unless you have only 256MB RAM in your machine and run several applications in the background this should not cause hangs.

Ok, i have a Packard Bell 8450 with a triple core processor 210 ghz with 3.00 gb of ram running windows vista home premium. I have made sure that all of my not needed processes are closed and im running the latest viewer.
It logs on perfectly fine but every minute or so it freezes, the viewer screen goes white and says not responding at the top and the rest of my pc is frozen too, after 20 to 30 seconds it comes back to working ok as if nothing happened and then a minute later it does it again.
I have made sure im i a very low traffic area on SL too and it still does it. I know its not my internet as it still runs via my laptop, i was just hoping the desktop would be better. i dont know what i can do to get it working?

Have 4gigs of RAM, which I know are not all usable under Windows 7, so it is probably something on my system not liking 7. BTW, CV does not crash, I usually just shut down to clear memory for a bit.

This sort of behavior comes in from two possible sources. 1) Your system is constantly running out of RAM, 2) Your system is overheating. In case 1, you didn't say what type of graphics card you have, but googling Packard Bell 8450 brings up that it must be a NVidia GeForce 8200 with 256 Mb onboard RAM. That gpx is built into the motherboard and is the lowest in the 8000 series. That said, 256 Mb is barely enough to run SL, so without a doubt your system is constantly wrestling DDR RAM from Windows, and Windows Vista is a RAM hog. However, 3 Gb RAM "should" sufice, theoretically. My suggestion is to update your gpx driver. Look in the NVidia website under "Download Drivers". In case 2, take a look at the inside of your computer, clean all dust bunnies, make sure all fans are working (be careful), don't block any air holes around the casing with furniture, books, etc. Add another fan if possible and/or deemed necessary. Lastly, make sure your system is not running any unnecessary programs in the background while you're running SL. By unnecessary programs I mean such as Yahoo/Windows messengers, screensavers, printer managers, Photoshop, and the like. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. Yes it was the 8200, i updated the driver as you suggested. when i now run second life it gives me the popup message
" Your system contains a Graphics Card that is unknown to us at this time. This is often the case with new hardware we havent had a chance to test. Second life will most likely run properley but you may need to adjust your graphics settings to something more appropriate"
SL does still run but with the same problem of freezing after about a minute and then unfreezing 30 seconds later. The PC is only about a month old but i took the cover off anyway to makes sure all was clean and fans all running and they were.
I have also tried leaving the PC of over night and turning it on in the morning and starting SL and still get the same problem so i assume the over heating thing would not be the cause do you think?
I have also made sure no other programmes are running that may cause it to slow down.
So im at a total loss now and it seems that i wont be able to rum SL anymore.

Same symptoms happened to me about half a year ago. I tried everything and was desperate... but nothing helped. Then i decided to do a system restore to an earlier date (since it HAD been working all right a few weeks before)
I remember a windows update was reversed (cant find the exact one, this was over 6 months ago) and voila! Everything worked perfect again.
I know this wont be of much help to you, since I'm rategr vague, but I'm hoping others might think: oh yes......that might be it!
