Anyone experience a really distorted...static-y kind of sound after playing for awhile (sometimes)? The drivers to my "Creative SB Live! Value (WDM)" (errm.. whatever...) are updated. No idea what WDM means. In dxdiag, full hardware sound acceleration is enabled. It's not a game killer but it's kind of annoying when I have to restart to get rid of it. The sound scares the crap out of me too when it's sudden.

You have a Dell? Where did you find updated drivers for that card? I have the same one, and have had a problem finding the dell drivers that work.
I have always had sound issues, but mine are different. My sound works fine when I first log on, but soon afterwards all my sound stop working, I still hear wind and a few sounds, but its usually quiet. It hasnt really bothered me because i usually have TV on or listen to music, but it might be nice to have working sound.

I play SL on my Dell, I had the same problems. I just figured I needed the new DirectX, since DirectX handles sound for SL. Try that, folks, get the latest and greatest DirectX.

I have no idea how you know I have a Dell (I happen to), because that card I mentioned came out of a totally different system. Anyway, I went to creative's site. www.soundblaster.com As for DirectX, I kinda doubt mine is out of date but I'll check it. Are you saying that you had this problem and updating DirectX fixed it?

No, I only played on the Dell a few times. I never bothered updating it, but, I suggest you do it anyway.

Sound Drivers

I too experience the sound Problems . I have a creative Labs Sound Blaster LIve Card With the Latest Drivers In My Dell Dimention 8200.
I spoke to Lindenlabs about it and they told me it was the sound drivers they were using in the game .
Since this is the Only Program that i have the problem with i kinda figured the problem is in the sl client and not my drivers

Last night I encountered a new issue. I was hearing a bunch of sounds of items that were in my inventory. I was walking down the new path to Lindenworld and I faintly hear this sappy, poppy, song I have in my inventory.
I could not believe anyone else would have this song, so I spin around and try to pinpoint where it is coming from. When I crank my speakers all the way up, I hear the song better, and I also hear cracklin of fire, a various other sounds of items that are in my inventory! I did not have them out, they were simply stored away, making faint sound.

Whoa freaky...your inventory is haunted!
Well buggers...if it's a problem on LL's end and they are aware of it, is there an estimation for a fix date?

Yes, I have this problem too, blasts of screeching static and snippets of sounds that are not playing in the area. It only happens once in a while, but once it starts it gets more frequent and the only way to get rid of it is to restart the game. I filed a bug report about it a long time ago. I have a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy, with up-to-date drivers in a bespoke system. Just thought I'd let you guys know, there's a way to fix this I think, however in my situation, it causes my speakers/tv-tuner to not work, but you guys probably won't have those problems as my speakers inherently give off bad karma. You've probably all installed the latest Creative drivers from their website, and if not, I suggest you try that out and see if it fixes your problem. If you have, there is infact an addictional windows driver that Creative doesn't want you to know about! Or at least they don't know about it... Right click on "My Computer" (Or whatever you like to call it) and hit properties. Click the Hardware tab then hit the Device Manager button. Go down to Sound, video and game controllers and click the "plus" (+) sign. Your sound card should be in there somewhere, probably listed as "Creative SB Live! Series" if you have the latest patch (this applies to you SB Live! WDM people, the rest of you, you'll have to figure out which is your sound-card yourself). So you found your sound card listed, right? Right click on it and then hit "Update Driver". Install what's "Recommended" and it might find online somewhere a newer driver than the Creative one you already have installed. If it does, install it and it might fix your static problem in SL. If it doesn't find the driver, then somthing else to try (if you're really that desperate, like me) is uninstalling your sound card's drivers completely and only updating them through the windows thing I just showed you. Fooling around works sometimes, but if anything seems to break on you, just go back by uninstalling whatever drivers are on it and just reinstalling the current Creative drivers. Hope this works for some, if not all, of you!

Thanks for mentioning this discovery, Dave. I've tried it and my speakers DO still work...I won't know if the static problem is gone for quite some time though, since I can't reproduce the problem. I guess if I don't run into it at all during the next few weeks it's okay.
Side note for trying this: Since we're all high bandwidth SL players we probably all have firewalls up (right?)...you have to either take your firewall down for a few seconds or give it an opening (not sure what "opening" that would be) that lets Windows do this, otherwise it won't find anything to upgrade...
BTW Wednesday describes the problem MUCH better than I originally did, that's definitely the same thing.
