I don't know if anyone else has had an issue with this, but I just recently upgraded from an ATI X1800 GTO 256MB video card to a Radeon X3870 512MB video card and ever since have not been able to log into Second Life or if I am able it crashes about 30 seconds later with no error but only a crash logger. Does anyone know what could be the issue?
Full System Specs AMD 64 X2 4400+ 2GB DDR 400 Radeon X3870 512MB with Catalyst 8.1 (Have also tried downgrading to 7.12) Windows XP Pro 64bit
I have tried Windlight and Onrez, and have tried removing all versions and manually deleting all files and reinstalling to no effect. Please help. Also, I have and can run many 3D games on their highest settings with no trouble at all so I know my card is working perfectly well.

crash logger loop/failer to login
02-10-2008 06:57
I am having the same problem, and I was fine using my pc until wednesday. I have a AMD 3200 processor, and a ATI 2600HD card and everything was fine until Wednesday and now I too have the failer to launch after crash logger comes up.

This is incredibly frustrating. ATI released new graphics drivers and Second Life has updated both the regular version and the Windlight versions and I still cannot maintain a logon for more than a few seconds.
My wife can play just fine on her own computer so I know it's not our internet, firewall, or anything related. All I did before this stopped working was upgraded my X1800 to an X3870. I have tried rolling my graphics drivers all the way back to 7.11. I have tried fresh installs of both my graphics drivers and viewers. All other 3D applications I have run great. I get 8200 points in 3Dmark 2006. What is the deal with Second Life?

ATI Work Around... Maybe!
02-16-2008 19:48
I just tried to Disable "Catalyst AI" in the Catalyst Control Pannel and I seem to have Stopped Crashing.... Only been like 10 minutes so far ... but thats much better than the 10 seconds I was lasting before.... Give it a Try ATI Peeps ... and maybe you with the NVidia card can find something simalar ... Catalyst AI is suposed to allow the aplication to optimize the graghics properties automaticaly. BTW .... still haven't crashed !!

Have you installed the latest .NET Framework version 3? ATI GC's apparently are a bit more sensitive than nVidia cards with OpenGL platforms, which require .NET Framework btw.

i had the exsact same problem with my ati 1800xt... i set everything to default in the catalyst thingy and then i could start up the game... but now all my text is screwed up, like its missing a line or been pushed together so its unreadable, i even tried to change the side on my UI with no luck. i tried all kinds of settings still with no luck... its kinda annoying to have notepad running in the back to copy text from sl so its readable.. numbers, letters... everything is screwed... but aleast i can run the game... here what my text looks like..!!! http://img137.imageshack.us/my.php?image=texterrorax1.jpg

Not having this problem myself but I don't understand what you are saying. try here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=10CC340B-F857-4A14-83F5-25634C3BF043&displaylang=en this is version 3.. there is a higher version, but its beta. .NET Framework is a platform on which programmes that use OpenGL benefit from, especially if you have a ATI card.

Catalyst Control Center
02-21-2008 19:32
Sorry ... been gone for a few days .. Catalyst control center requires min of Net Framework 2.0 to run so you'll need that .... if you don't have Catalyst installed already, I suggest you look to the ATI website and get the latest version of the Drivers and CCC ... but Only if you are having a problem... If it ain't Broke ... Don't Fix it !

Ok, sooo I've been running SL on a loaner computer and it only had 512RAM and some crappy video card and even though the graphics settings have to all be turned down to the absolute it lowest settings it runs....
So how come it wont run on my new laptop thats way better than that crappy loaner?
Here my specs AMD turion 64x2 mobile technology TL-64 2.20 GHz processor 3 gigs of RAM DDR2 ATI mobility Radeon 2400 HD video card Windows Vista 32 bit home edition
Now I checked all the requirements and should be good to go right? Well I have that pesky problem where I keep crashing after I log on, as stated in previous posts. I checked here right after I had this problem and was ecstatic when I say a possible solution in this thread.
I have downloaded the newest driver, turned of the Catalyst AI, Turned off my VBO (mentioned in another thread about ATI video cards crashing), and have even turned all my SL graphics setting to the minimum. And though it takes about a minute, it still crashes...
Am I doing something wrong? Did I leave out anything? Was I wrong in thinking this computer would be good enough to run secondlife?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Are you guys running ANY OTHER PROGRAMS besides SL? Any strange processes? Anything that would need some power, like PhotoShop or The Gimp?
Johnzord, I think you just answered your own question. You need to completely uninstall the drivers from the card that you removed.

Whereas previous builds of Windows used the WIN.ini and BOOT.ini files to keep basic programme data, the newer versions use a central database called the registry. Like all databases, it becomes bloated and corrupted, missing links etc are all common.
When you uninstall a programme, they do not always clean their entries in the registry, on the assumption, you may want to preserve your personal settings etc. Over time, this registry becomes unweidly and full of broken links.
To keep things running sweetly, I go through a routine of uninstalling software prior to installing a fresh updated copy, cleaning the registry in between. The same for Drivers. It would not be unusual to find several hundred errors/missing links, when you run a registry cleaner after only a couple of months of using a fresh install of windows (depending on your activities). Even relatively minor activity, will still result in broken links and errors.
Fonts, is another culprit. The more programmes we install that come with their own fonts, each install those into the registry and are pre-cached into memory. The more fonts, the slower the OS is to load and be ready for action.
In addition, you need to check the Exemptions Tab in the Firewall (Icon in Control Panel), making sure programmes you do not either recognise, or trust, being allowed to bypass your firewall. The new thing in Windows is the 'Services', the basic installation assumes you are a network administrator, and so a variety of 'services' are turned on by default. Turning them to manual, rather than auto, will preserve some CPU cycles and memory.

Omg -- Doh!
02-29-2008 13:37
Ok, after trying all the other solutions, my problem was solved by a much simpler fix. Somehow, after updating my ATI drivers, my Desktop Settings were set to 16bit, which is incompatible. Once at 32bit everything is back to normal. Now I'm back!

I had the same issues , the only fix for me - ati9800 pro video card - was to go back to the old 8.432.0.0 driver release, anything past that causes major problems.
