having problems logging in

whenever i try to log in to second life i get an error message that says: login failed, unable to connect to a simulator.
please help

I'm assuming you've been able to log-in in the past. If not make sure your computer specs are within the range to run SL.

There are a number of things that you can try -

Reset your router (turn it off for a few minutes).
Try logging in to a different sim.
See if using the Release Candidate or other client makes a difference.
Clear cache. Ditch the settings.xml if you've recently changed something prior to the problem.

Others with clearer ideas will post more, I bet.

i dont think that will help, my brother uses second life on my computer and it works just fine for him. its only my account that has this problem.

Get your login screen up, then open Edit --> Preferences, and tick "Show Start Location on Login Screen" in General. Type a sim name in the field that shows by your login fields down on the lower left.
