Hi, I am having a problem with audio, I will run SL and sound will be fine, I won't change any settings, and the next time I log in I will not get any sound, not just audio from media but any in world sounds. the only way I could get the sound back is to reinstall. But now that is not even helping, and I don't know what to do. I am running vista built in audio card, Norton internet security through my ISP which I even shut down to see if it was interfering. windows firewall is off, router has all necessary settings and port forwarding. I dont know what is going on. Any help is appresciated

Some specs of your audio and system would be useful.

are you running wireless or wired?

this is an odd one... losing the stream only happens quite frequently but I haven't heard of this one ..yet ;) ...
it is possible that you have the mute on in the Client? it can get pushed in I have done that and went hours trying to figure it out.

The other option would be edit>preferences>audio and make sure its all good (I assume you have already though)

I don't know Vista at all, 2 weeks and I will have a Vista OS on a new laptop to try out.
Someone with vista maybe can point to some ideas in that. (in XP and prior you could go Control panel> audio> (or the speaker icon in the task bar) and make sure thats all not muted, I assume you have checked this as well?)

Are you getting sound anywhere else? web//local?

what client are you running ? the standard 1.21 or an RC client?

I'm running wireless, I have checked all possable setting, in SL and out. Like a coupleof hours ago I got on SL and sound was great, I log in just now, and I have no sound in SL. All other audio, local/web works great, it is just in SL

With SLVoice, this has crashed on me several times, all other programmes work fine, I suspect memory leaks causing driver corruption.
With music streams, same thing, they come and go, turning the player off and back on again, sometimes re-establishes the connection.

With all media in SL, although SL/LL do not host or stream any media directly (except sound bytes/ambient sound), they are responsible for broadcasting the urls, which can sometimes fail intermittently.

As you say, 'sound' works for a while, then fails, this could be the reason, especially as you have increased latency from your wireless connection. However, unless you 'soak test' your audio, it could also be caused by the onboard chip becoming overheated. Both are relevant although not conclusive. The reinstalling of SL giving you some releif, could be that the time it takes, allows the audio chip to cool. Alternatively, it may reinstall the audio drivers used by SL, which maybe corrupt.

When I first used Vista, it only lasted 30 minutes on my system, before being junked for the more familar XP. This was soley due to Vista turning off my soundboard because it stated that my headset wasn't Vista compatible, and that I should contact my manufacture and 'demand' a compatible set!
I overcame that 'issue' some 6 months later, by tuning off Account User Control and now all is fine. Also installing SL as Administrator (right hand click the install file and choose 'run as administrator') seemed to give me less long term issues.

Thanls for that I wouldn't have even thought to do that. (thankfully my Vista is foing to the wife LOL, I like my XP and glad I didn't do the OEM free update)

I hadn't thought of voice causing an issue, makes since, as well as heat.

and wireless can cause al sorts of issues with SL, but even if the streams drop (II would think the sounds like wind and UI produced would play.
