I dont know what to ask or how to say it but if someone could help me it would be greatly appreicated

DNS is what attaches a name (secondlife.com) to an IP address. It's like... ok, say you get into a taxi and tell the driver "take me to bob's house" -- the taxi driver doesn't know where bob lives unless you give him bob's physical address (secondlife.com = bob's house; the IP address = physical address). Does that make sense?
Your ISP's DNS server is probably messed up. You need to contact their tech support to get them to fix the issue. In the mean-time, the IP address for the forums here is 63.211.151.5 -- you can plug http://63.211.151.5/ into your browser address bar to get to the forums if http://forums.secondlife.com/ doesn't get you here. If you still can't get to the forums using the IP address, but you can get to other sites on the web, then the issue is (most likely) that a major router in between you and SL is down. Shouldn't be down for *days* however -- I'd be calling my ISP's tech support. Give them the URLs / IP addresses that you know and have them ping / run tracert's. Good luck, and let us know what it turns out to have been, ok? #! _____________________

My fiance has the same problem. She will get DNS errors from the site and not be able to log in (using the shortcut created by the game and everything) and then suddently she will be able to. She is on a home network and no other computers in her house are able to visit the site or log in when this is happening. I have to check but I think she tried power-cycling the modem and router. It is weird, considering what DNS is and how it works.

Ama, that's too weird.
Has she tried changing the shortcut's target so the IP address is in there instead of login.agni.lindenlab.com ? (resolves to 63.211.151.1 ![]() Vershean, everyone's password field has a bunch of *'s in it -- it's the programmer's way of not letting anyone know how many characters are in your password. You shouldn't have to erase and retype it. #! _____________________

Trouble with DNS too, I've changed the default DNS server to something else and it worked again.
A better way to test if the IP adres of secondlife.com can be reached is pinging 63.211.151.5 instead of trying it in your browser. Some webservers feel te need to send the domain name anyway when you try the IP and then your browser tries that the domain anyway right after it made contact. |

Yay, problems that are not consistent, and difficult to reproduce in the office!
![]() Can I get folks who are having DNS issues relating to logging in do the following for me, and post the results here? Open an MS-DOS Prompt (or a Command Prompt... depending on what you're using... it's hidden in the Accessories part of the Start Menu sometimes), and run the following commands: nslookup secondlife.com nslookup forums.secondlife.com nslookup login.agni.lindenlab.com nslookup www.lindenlab.com Copy the output from those, and paste it into this thread. I suspect that some ISPs aren't running their nameservers properly, but it's difficult to tell from here. My guess is that they are caching our old IP address range, in which case there's nothing we can do; you'll need to talk to them about it. The output from the above commands will help me tell what's going on. Thanks! |

Well my fiances problem is really weird because here are some more things that happen / more description:
- #! : Ok I need to look at taht short cut better next time, I thought the IP at the end was the linden lab servers - didn't realize there was a whole url before it. ![]() - At the time when she can't get on the site or the game she can browse any other site she visits. - I am on the same ISP, different house, 2 blocks away, and I have never had a problem. - Its intermittant. She won't be able to get on for a few hours, then suddenly she will. She won't have problems for a while then suddenly she can't get on. - It hasn't happened since .7.0 I think. But if it does happen again we will be sure to get that information for you Mark. |
