lag with large ping

I keep getting realy bad lag.
looking at the meter, my ping goes from 200ms normal up to 2500+ms...
is this very long ping the sighn of a faulty conection or what is it ?
what can I do to improve the systems performance ?

Have you experienced a bandwidth spike, pause, back, spike, lock up so bad your kicked off your connection? Mind you I dont just mean SL connection. I am talking cable( provider)connection.
Ever since 10.4 I havent had a solid connection. It got better after 10.6 for a short time then came back with the next update.
I thought it was my end. I have replaced net card, updated; drivers, cable modem, all viruse checks, removed caches, defraged, reinstalled SL. Then I find out others are the same problem.
There is no patteren to this either. Yesterday the only problems I experienced were fast crashes to desktop.
I have a very good PC. I have had the net provider come and check my lines. In a nut shell its NOT MY END.
Whats also frustrating is how many of us are going through this and think its our systems. We go out and spend money needlessly to find out whats going on.
I own a sim. Im reallysick of paying $200 a month to be kicked off every so often.

I'm getting this as well. I've nevr had this sort of problem. But watching the stats, I am seeing random ping spikes from the sim (which then reflect to the user) going all the way up into the 7000s (tho usually it caps out around 5K). This is higher then the meter even GOES, and is often accompanied by wierd packet loss issues as well. This ONLY started hapening with the 10.4 update... and then was fixed by the subsequent "required' patch. However the optional patch after that killed the connection again. I would like to hear some feedback on what is going on, as I've been told by some people "in the know" (no official Lindens, hence my posting this) that this is a KNOWN ISSUE. If it's a known issue, I could not find any notification of it on the Forums (Admittedly I may be looking in the wrong places, so if someone does have a link, please add it to a reply) or any notice that the Lindens actually know this is a problem, only word from someone who may or may not have the facts.

Please, I'd like some official word on this, and at least some indication that it's being worked on. I enjoy SL too much, and don't want this glitch driving me from it (Which at this rate, this glitch is starting to make SL unplayable).

I have been asking about this since the update before last, I think - the same random ping sites, packet loss, etc.

I figure it's just the way SL is now.

You are correct in that assumption... gettin a new pc will not solve this problem... had an old dell dimension when i started this game.. spent way too much on a new high end gaming system and I still either get stuck... typing forever... or crash from this new bug from the latest release... touch a poseball and take a pic or visa versa. It can't be all the cable companies now can it?

Same happens to me, and now I can't play SL at all anymore.

Anyone still have this problem? I sure do.. :/

I'll play for maybe five minutes if I'm lucky, then my ping will spike into the thousands and It'll be hard to get around for obvious reasons. Frequent crashes also plague me.. this came suddenly though, never had the problem before.
