I have a GeForce FX 4600 with 256MB of memory, in the 1.1 preview on the display preference 256MB is greyed out. Is it greyed out because 256MB video memory isn't supported yet, and if it is supported does anyone else have the same problem?

I think that's global Edav. I've been getting this too, even when I tried on a comp with a 256MB card. Probably just doesn't support it in this beta; I'm sure they'll add it before the final version.

This is actually a function of the amount of system memory you have. Right now you need more than 1GB to use the 256MB option, but we'll probably tweak that a little bit before release. I wouldn't sweat it much though, it's rare that SL can even use all the memory on a 128MB card, and the penalty for too low a setting is just some fuzzy textures. (The penalty for too high a setting, however, is abysmal performance)
We'd like to set this option automatically but OpenGL doesn't give us a good way to determine how much video memory you have. Someday.

Do I need more than 1GB of RAM? I already have 1GB installed.

Right now you need more than 1GB, yes. I'm going to adjust it so that if you have "only" 1GB, as you do, you'll be able to use the 256MB setting. This change will probably make it into the next 1.1 release.

I've raised a related issue in the main 1.1 Preview thread. My card has 128DDR, but settings higher than 32mb are grayed out. This has been true in all releases of the 1.1 client.
Of course, all settings are available in 1.011. I get much higher fps at the 64mb setting than at 32mb. And there's no difference in appearance between the two; just much slower rendering at the lower setting.
If I'm going to be limited to using 32mb in 1.1, it will be unusable on my system. As it is, I have to set all graphics options to the most minimal settings to get the fps up to 5-6. And the 32mb setting also creates massive distortions in rendering. Quite unusable.
