What grid do you mean, the floating white snap-to rulers in edit mode? What are they doing differently for you?

Ok, then you will be in good shape, this is something you can set on the fly in the edit panel!
In the edit pane (press Ctrl-3 so we are looking at the same section), you'll see a button "Options..." just underneath the Use Grid check box. Click that and you'll get some settable things.
"Grid Unit (meters)" is the one you want at 0.5 to get it the way you like. The "Grid Extents default I think is 12.
ETA: Also, "enable sub-unit snapping" will draw some extra lines for in-between points, try flipping that one to see which is the one you preferred.
Below the "Options..." button is the Ruler Mode menu, the setting most people use is World.
Are those what you have? If not, are things back to what you expected if you put them there?

Just added about sub-unit snapping under the same box, try flipping that too. The grid really hasn't changed in the new version, perhaps you can post a screen shot to better describe your problem?

Ok, when it shows x instead of m for the numbers, that means you have reference or local mode chosen back in the edit pane. In local mode, that gives you a relative proportion of the object, in reference mode if gives you a multiple of a coordinate on another object you picked with Ctrl-G.
To get back to the meters thing, pick World from the Ruler Mode menu, as in the earlier post.
