Right, well, it was pretty bad in 1.1.3... going into the appearance tab to make a jacket would ALWAYs make my computer freeze totally, requiring a reboot. Now, going into the appearance tab at ALL makes my computer crash. Something about VPU failure. Windows XP tries to recover, but the display is completely borked and I need to restart. This is... er, kinda serious. I can no longer add shirts, change clothes, or even modify my avatar anymore. Radeon 9000, directx 9.0, AMD 1.4 ghz, 512 MB DDR ram, gigabyte motherboard... ...need anything else? > LF

Lordfly:
When was the last time you updated the drivers on your motherboard? I know I seem to preach this alot, but older AMD CPU's were usually using SIS and VIA chipsets which took some time to get AGP working properly.
So the first suggestion I'd make is to goto your motherboard manufacturer's website with the exact model number of your motherboard. Download the latest motherboard drivers, including the BIOS (they are usually seperate downloads) and follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. IT's not a difficult process, but a mistake here does very bad things to your computer.
If this doesn't work, please let me know by sending an email to support@lindenlab.com and make sure to detail the steps you've already gone through.
Regards,

I got the VIA 4-in-1 drivers, but I shied away from the bios, for fears that i would destroy the world.
I'll give them a shot, I guess.

Well... I *THINK* I did it right...
first, I rebooted, and my screen went blank. Rebooted again, it says it lost the bios, recovering...
then it lost the CMOS, and in theory, recovered it.
I am currently posting on the machine, as it loaded windows without a hitch. Here's hoping it stays that way, as windows XP just notified me that it found new hardware and must reboot..
eek...
Updating your BIOS is a hair raising process.

From: someone Originally posted by Lordfly Digeridoo first, I rebooted, and my screen went blank. Rebooted again, it says it lost the bios, recovering...
then it lost the CMOS, and in theory, recovered it. That sounds like the update failed completely, and the BIOS you flashed in was either wrong or corrupted (incomplete). Luckily you had a board with auto-recovery, so it detected that and flashed a working version of the BIOS back (which is likely old). So you still need updating. It should display a version number someplace when booting.

the bios version says "F9", which is the version i flashed in. It was originally F3. It fixed the appearance tab crashing/reboot. It does NOt fix: 1) crashing when minimized 2) corrupted textures (banded textures, gfreen flashy textures, etc.) 3) slowness Lf

The VPU error you got was from the display drivers. I assume you have at least Catalyst v. 3.8 (since that was the first version with the VPU recovery). If you haven't done so already, download and install the Catalyst v. 3.9 drivers. They have been working well for me.

You know, the funny thing with these VPU and "black screen" issues is that the frequency of my crashes increases greatly when I'm building. If I'm doing other stuff like scripting I don't crash nearly as much...

One thing you can do about slowness is buy a new PC. Sounds like a joke. But I did buy a new motherboard, processor, memory and video card a while ago. Hate to admit it but I think there was a little voice in my head telling me that Second Life was too slow. I can't seem to remember any other reason why I would need a new PC But then again I am very impulsive sometimes, and if you're not then you better have a look at your current funds on the bank to see if it's worth buying a new PC for SL

I know what you can do to fix this. First you will take out your ATI card and beat it with a sledgehammer. Then you will spray lighter fluid all over it and ignite it. Then you dance around the fire smoking a cigar and chanting "jen hsun huang". After a while you will put out the fire with chicken blood and intone a prayer to the god of nVidia! Then you go out and buy a shiny new FX5200 and your problem will be solved
