
Is there a way to slow down sl, restrict the fps or the amount of processing power it uses?
The reason is that i run it on the background and want to keep some power for other application, extend battery life or run my system less hot.

Yes. There is a command that allows you to reduce the FPS SL runs at.
People used to use that trick on slower machines with weaker graphic cards and to help keep them cool. FlipperPA knows this trick however, not i. I will ask him if I see him log into SL. I will also send him this thread and hope he answers for you. He is way cool like that. _____________________

Thanks to Briana for pointing me here!
There's a command line option that causes SL not to grab all available power by giving up X milliseconds after each frame is rendered. Here's a full list of the various command line options you can add to your Second Life short cut: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Client_parameters The one you want is "--cooperative" - details are at the link above, towards the bottom of the list. Yes i assume that's a fixed amount of ms that are dropped after each frame is renedered.
So sl renders one frame and then waits X ms not rendering, other functions seem to continue normally. For 10 fps, i would try 75. And i find it a great option, wish i could change it while the viewer was running. Using this my laptop runs using much less power (about 70% less) and remains a lot cooler (48-53C instead of 70-80C). |

The debug setting "BackgroundYieldTime" might help. That one does help, but it only affects the speed when sl is not the active window. However i did use it to turn sl even more down when it's running in the background. |
