So I install second life, I type in my username and password etc.

I get as far as this:

Then... About 2 minutes later I get:

Now I know hardly anything about the technical side of computers but my mate who is sitting next to me, on his own computer, running this thing is able to log in to both my own and his account. So I know its my laptop that has the problem and not my account.

I have some gay as hp laptop thing that I got in 2007, here are the specs:

Intel(R) core 2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz
RAM: 1.00GB

Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family

I have never been skull-fucked this bad with login errors since PlayStation Home was first released, so how can I fix this?

A gay laptop? I suggest you edit your post if you mean to use this word to describe your laptop negatively. You might get more help that way.

Who cares? I'm asking for help, not on how to describe my laptop. If you're going to post, at least answer my question.

Well, someone who could answer your question, who might be gay, might not bother when he/she sees you use that word that way. Also, it is against the Community Guidelines, and therefore a ToS violation, and a pretty serious one.

Just one guy's opinion. Good luck with solving your issue.

Going off-topic is also against community guidelines just so you know. Now stop your bitching and gtfo of this thread. Your opinion doesn't matter to me, the way I used the word "gay" isn't made to be offensive, it is just an expression.

Okay. Looking at your PC's specs, you appear to be quite low on RAM. 2 GB is usually a minimum starting point for a good experience in SL, and 4GB is what you need for smooth running, once you are in.

If you only have 1 GB, then I suggest you shut down as much as you can to free up memory. But once you are in, I suspect that you will not be satisfied.

But then again, it might just be a comms issue, and nothing to do with RAM at all. That wouldn't be surprising, I think.

Well thank you, I don't think RAM is too much of a problem for this. I can run a lot of other things that take up more RAM than SL, its just logging in that is the problem.

If the problem persists try the following:

Shut down your computer, unplug the POWER cord of your modem, unplug the POWER cord of your router and wait one full minute.

After the full minute plug the modem's power cord back in. Wait while the modem runs self diagnostics and acquires a connection from your internet provider. This should take anywhere from 1 minute to a half hour depending on your internet provider and line quality conditions. If all the expected lights light up plug in your router. Wait 1 minute for the router to run self diagnostics and acquire connection data from your modem.

Turn on your laptop and attempt to connect to Second Life. If successful then the process above will have done the following:

Remove cached DNS data from both your modem and router.
Acquired new dynamic IP address. (Unless you have a static IP address from your provider.)
Acquired updated DNS addresses.

If not then there is either a problem with logging into SL on LL's end OR a DNS issue with your provider. They should be able to fix this themselves, usually within a couple of hours to a day or two. Or there is a firewall running on your system/router that is preventing SL from connecting.

That message you get is LL's catch all error. It does not tell you much at all.......only that you failed to log in. There's a lot of missing specs for any really helpful suggestions. If you give us a little more about your computer and how you connect to the internet it will most likely help someone help you.

Your operating system? On a home network (or any network)? Wireless or wired? Just to name a little that would be helpful.

My guess is that your RAM is part of the problem........1 gig of RAM, if you are on a Vista machine, is barely enough to keep the operating system going. Put Second Life in the mix and it's hit or miss if SL will even launch. Also, I know most users of laptops are connected wirelessly and wireless is iffy with SL (it's not supported by LL). And the graphics on most laptops are sorely lacking in the performance arena.

But, without something more from you on your computer all I've said are guesses.
