I'm just checking on a few privacy issues.

1: Security Devices (orbs and such like) which I (and my neighbours all have)
There is no way an Avatar can bypass them is there and just wander into your home?

2: I assume there is no way to SEE or DETECT someone's "floating" camera viewpoint (so they can see into your home without their avatar there, or triggering any security you have in place?

3: When chatting, I understand, others can only really hear local chat if they can see the name above your head, much further than that and you are outside local chat "hearing" range. I think I've seen products that allow you to hear conversations at a greater distance than normal. But, I assume this is "local chat"
There is no way for someone else to hear (see typing) of you privatly chatting to another Avatar is there?

I know there's no such thing as "total" privacy in SL (unless you have a standalone and ban all access" but I'd like to know about the above items if anyone knows and/or the best ways to detect./protect against others spying eyes on me.

1- It depends on how well the security device is written. It isn't a difficult thing to write, but it might could be bypassed.

2- There is no way to stop their camera from looking in. We can all disable camera constraints and move our cameras farther than a security device can scan.

3- Public chat is public chat. Assume that everyone in the world is listening. There are chat repeaters and spoofers and everything else you and I haven't even thought of. The only secure chat in SL is IM.

As you said, the only way to get real privacy is to have your own private sim and not allow anyone else to come there.

Many thanks for the reply.

Point 1: Yeah, I kinda thought that security orbs for actual avatars entering their range should be pretty good. Esp the 1 or 2 BIG name ones.

Point 2: So, just to clarify, there is no way at all to in anyway detect that someone may be using camera controls to stare to straight in the face whilst you are in your (supposed) secure home. No way or stopping and no way of detecting?

Point 3: thanks for explaining about local chat, so there is no spy device that anyone can use to listen in on private chat?

2- No way I know of.

3- That is correct. Linden Labs has stressed the point many times that there is no way for other residents to intercept private IMs.

Under the advanced menu, go to the character section and select "show look at". If someone is staring you in the face, you'll know it.

One of Torley's Video Tutorials explains it in more detail:
