The Doomsday Question

Given the recent slew of postings and coments regarding this latest outage, the question did occur to me: IF, at some point, Second Life suffers terminal meltdown and is no more, what then?

Knowing there are many, many merchants involved and others who have a substantial financial stake in SL, surely there would be some sort of plan for this event? But, at the same time, what of the thousands of 'average Joes' out there who aren't invested in SL with a business, but who nevertheless have literally thousands of Linden's worth of items bought and paid for? How does the fate of The Little Man fit into the 'end of the world' scenario?

Of course this latest outage is frustrating and inconvenient, and many are upset for any number of reasons. I myself was taken aback when it became obvious this outage is more severe than most. HOWEVER, I realize- as do many who commented on the situation- there is more to life than Second Life for the vast majority of Residents. Merchants and investors are one thing, and those who depend solely on Second Life for their RL livelihood have a real-world concern; the majority of SL citizens, though, have no such concern other than their personal in-world possessions.

While I would not wish to wake up one day to find SL gone for good, I know there are far worse things than losing a $3.00 pair of virtual bling stiletto shoes. I wouldn't be able to wow the other residents with my killer avatar (okay, so my shape was a freebie I modified), but that's okay. And for some, the joy of griefing would be no more, and playing 'lets orbit each other' with other noobs would be a thing of the past.

In the end- and I know I've sort of rambled over a lot of subjects in this- the question I asked remains: what happens if Second Life realy DOES go away, for good?

Just go to OpenSim, alert your customers through your external website where your business is now located. Save tier and aggravation.

Yeah makes you wander what would happen if the inventory servers and all sim content got wiped by a Virus or something overnight. Or when LL start selling servers off to the competition because land drops under $1/m

For some the question is how much of their content would they want to retain for use in other VR's.
Oviously textures, sculpt maps, sounds, and other offline creatable content can be stored independant of SL.
Scripts would be useless to retain. So the 1,000 dollar question is "How can you retain the prims?" Or more relevant perhaps is "How do you retain the forms?" The answer is glIntercept. You can capture the mesh of SL constructs and with minimal editing retain tons of hours spent prim pushing independant of LL's quirky asset servers.

Req. Help on: GLIntercept

It's ridiculous how they stop you from backing stuff up, even though they know they can just, poof, lose your stuff that cost you money and took you lots of work to build. With everyone so anti-backup, there doesn't seem to be any directions on how to use GLIntercept. How do you use it? It is by no means self-explanatory. TIA
