Hello, Sorry, I didn't find a better place here to post it (moderators please move to the right section, if this is the wrong one)... Why don't URLs in forum posts work, although it says "vbCode" is on? As a test: Vella Real Estates -> should show Vella Real Estates as a link, not with the tags. (And the same applies for the signature of course) Thank you.

At the top of the list of threads for the Resident Answers forum there are some threads that are what are called "Stickies", threads made to stay at the top of the thread list. One of these is "BBCode Emulation in Greasemonkey" , at /327/b2/188445/1.html , which addresses this problem. If you use Firefox, you can install the Greasemonkey add-on as described in that thread and then go to userscripts.org and install the "BBCode in Text" script as described in that thread. Greasemonkey and the BBCode in Text script will also work in Google Chrome and I believe it can be made to work in Opera with a slight modification to the script. You can of course highlight and copy the text of an url and paste it into your browser's address bar. If you use Internet Explorer, there is a similar solution to making links clickable, which is described in a post near the end of that thread. There is also an Internet Explorer add-on that might be of some value at “Preview and Launch URL“ http://www.ieaddons.com/en/details/other/Preview_and_Launch_URL/If you click on the link down where it says vBcode is on, you will go to a page that shows which codes are on: img, highlight, and quote.

also, when you post, at the bottom there is a checkbox that says "Automatically parse links in text"
if you turn that off you can post a link without getting the tags, but no one ever remembers its there

From: Osgeld Barmy also, when you post, at the bottom there is a checkbox that says "Automatically parse links in text I guess that must be the option I was trying to remember earlier today. Doesn't do what I was hoping for, unfortunately.

Thanks for your answers. I'll live with that. Was just wandering why it didn't work, although it's a rather basic feature (and as I am not one of the people who live in this forum, I have to admit that I haven't read all the stickies). Will move to short URLs then, so that the text at least remains readable. Installing plug-ins for browsers I do not use, is off the menu. Again, thanks alot! And have a nice Valentine's Day everyone! Suzanna

From: SuezanneC Baskerville What browser do you use? Safari on Mac OS. But don't worry, it's not that important to see the links correctly. And it shouldn't be the browser's (or a plug-in's) responsibility anyway to interpret vbCode properly. I was merely wondering why this feature is not activated or working as it should in these forums.

Security is why; it's possible to do bad things in this old version of vBulletin, and LL chose not to upgrade the forum software with a more secure version. I'm not aware that LL has ever explained in detail exactly why they haven't upgraded the forum software. I'm getting the impression that now they've got plans for replacing these forums with Yahoo Answers style forums. ========= I did find an url on how to run user scripts in Safari, it's at http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/11/14/how-to-run-greasemonkey-scripts-in-safari. I have the feeling that Strike's script will not work using the approach described at that link because it's too clever and Greasemonkey specific, but there are some simpler linkify scripts around that might work just to get some basic linkification going on.

SuezanneC, I do appreciate your help, really. Thanks a lot. However, as I said, I am not going to install any plug-ins to make the browser do the work the forum software is supposed to do. I'm not a big friend of having loads of plug-ins installed. I can absolutely live with using copy&paste instead of just clicking on a link. I really only was wondering. Security issues are indeed a good reason. Thank you.

Doesn't Safari have a "highlight, right click, and go to url" option?
