Ever since yesterday evening Ive been having an issue with SL only where every 3-5 minuntes SL would time out, I would sit there talking to people like and idiot for a following 30-45 seconds before getting the tell tail "ding" and the message saying Ive been d/c'ed.
This is day to now that its been happining. Any suggestions?
So far I have; restarted my modem and my router Restarted the computer (obviously) Checked for packet loss (insignificant and rare)
My connection/hardware specs.
20mbps cable broardband with 512kbps uplink. Works fine, tested and retested.
5400+ duel core AM2 9800GT + 7600GT nVidia card's 4gb DDR2 RAM
Almost fresh install of Windows Vista (Hardware has been changed twice but Windows didnt request re-activation/re-installation) Windows is fully upto date SL is fully upto date
Im at a loss as to whats the issue. As it has worked fine - as well as you can call SL working - for 2 years (even with the issues SL has had and will likely have in the future with nVidia cards) then just starts randomly dc'ing now.

I just got through about 6 weeks of intermittant disconnections from the internet. The problem seemed to only happen on SL (and another virtural grid I play on) at first..........but I later found it happening randomly for most anything on the internet. Though quite a bit less freguently. A rebooting of the router "fixed" the problem though sometimes I also had to reboot my computer too. I was on the verge of getting a new router until I realized that the router was barely one year old........my previous router lasted over 5 years and was still going strong when I replaced it with my present one. I called Linksys (the manufacturer of my router) and talked to tech suppport. The rep had me reset the router to the factory defaults (that little button you push with a straightened paperclip). Then had me go into the router set up utility. There he had me change two things. He had me set the "auto detect" to manual. Then had me changed the default MTU from 1500 to 1375. Save and exit. It's been a good two weeks since that and I haven't lost a connection since..............compared to almost never a day going by that I did not have to reboot the router at least once (usually more). Call you router manufacturer and talk to them...........they probably will be able to help you. At least Linksys did me.

Well... Currently using a 10 year old Cisco router with serious amounts of home made firmware updates done to it. Doing a "factory default" restart is kind of out of the question :/ So far its only doing itwith SL and not things like WoW and others.
Whats puzzling me is that its worked up until about 6pm GMT monday and then started doing this. And only on my PC (I installed it on my brothers PC and it has been running fine so far) nothing changed on my PC.
And as were talking I am making final installs after a fresh install of windows (I got impatient) and Vista really doesnt take long to install anyway >.>
Will post back after giving the results of my reinstall

Fail. Ive been having alot of issues with my PC though recently. I may try and change the PSU on the off chance there isnt enough juice getting to the system. Its an old PSU and its underpowered as it is.

Oops, I forgot to mention that it was also just my computer losing the connections. Obviously, there is another computer connected to the router. Why else would a router be necessary? Anyway that computer never had the same problem. I even mentioned that to the tech who helped me..............he did not say so much, but he hinted heavily that it's somewhat normal for one computer to display problems while another won't. Assuming the tech knew what he was talking about (he did, afterall, fix my problem) your test might not be proof of anything. But, then, you've written your own firmware for your router so, as you say, it's a moot point. Discount my possible solution all you want and muddle through your problem. But, the problem does not exist with SL or the client. The problem is somewhere between your computer and LL's servers. Could it not be a little bug in your home brew firmware? Or maybe a ten year old router?

It isnt the router >.> Just to humour you though, I connected directly to the modem and it was still doing it.
I know that router inside and out better than I know my own house. and I believe I have found the cause of the problem.
Hardware. My PSU has a peek rating of 500-520 watts. The drain of the new motherboard and graphics card was too much. So I put my sisters PSU in which has an average running wattage of 550 and so far so good. Other problems I was having like insanely slow boot times and occasionally getting no connection on this system at all arnt rearing their heads any more (these problems showed up after initially posting on the forum)
Im just finishing doing windows updates, installed graphics drivers. When Its all done I will start up SL and see if its running.
Thank you very much for trying to help though =3 Much appreciated.
Will keep y'all posted
PS.
A router can be used as a bridge to connect multiple networks. It can also be used as a hardware firewall for a single computer (which really it is wether you want it to be or not) There are so many applications you can use a router for other than connecting 2 pc's on a home network to the internets. Though in this case, yes....
You could infact turn an entire PC into a router with the use of 2 NIC's

The actual cause of the problem is a faulty onboard lan chip. The board is 5 days old today and already breaking down.
So.... Nothing wrong with my home brew router!
