I recently got a quad-core processor, and am having some performance problems. Is there any way I can fix this. I saw a post about some one with dual-core, setting affinity for the second life exe, will this work with my quad-core? I get slow responses and lockups quite regularly.

Being CPU bound usually means that you get a low framerate or stuttering. I wouldn't look at CPU first if it was locking up..
If it's actually locking up, I'd probably check to make sure you've got good vid drivers and the disk that has your SL cache on it is happy.

also that it has proper / clean cooling inside the box
a lot of name brand machines will put some crap on top of the cpu in the name of "cost", thats one way they give you 50000000000$ worth of "free" software and a "free" printer
90% of their clients are using internet explorer, word, outlook and excel and when it goes into "hardcore" gaming mode its on the threshold, add in some dust, maybe a slow moving fan and you have issues
