Computer Specs Running SL

Dell Inspiron 1525

CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (1828 MHz)
Memory: 2038 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card Vendor: Intel
Graphics Card: Intel 965/963 Graphics Media Accelerator
OpenGL Version: 1.5.0 - Build 7.14.10.4885
LLMozLib Version: [LLMediaImplLLMozLib] - 2.01.15485 (Mozilla GRE version 1.8.1.13_0000000000)

Problems - Fps drops to 0.7 when looking at other avatars, system is almost unusable, freezes of intervals of 1 to 5 minutes >.<

Okay, i've read countless Forum entrys all over about specific Crashes, lock ups and general SL sluggishness.

Before i downgraded to XP recently, vista ran it without a hitch.....i don't want to go back to vista personally, it just baffles me why now i'm getting problems whereas before it was fine :S

so..

i had a look at a certain solution about changing the settings.xml file. did that with no success, the file was just overwritten and the problems still occur. Also checked out third party clients, still...even though i was able to disable object occulusion, no success.

My Drivers are up to date as i can get them, being that i have a Dell laptop, their drivers for the chipset are vista only >.< so i'm wondering if there's any solution round that....if atall.

I'm wondering if anyone out there has either an inspiron or laptop with an intel chipset and has found a way to at least lower the problems. because not only is it annoying, i want to avoid spilling cash which i can't do to get another system >.<

i know there's probably another forum or thread with a solution, but i want to find out first hand and i'll give thanks in advance.

If SL ran fine with Vista, it should run fine with XP too...........some will tell you better. You have an onboard graphics chip. Go to the manufactures website and look up the drivers for that graghics accelerator (for XP) and download the most recent and maybe one or two of the next most recent.....save them to your disk so you can try them one at a time. And before you install any new driver uninstall all the old drivers FIRST. If you have a program like CCleaner run the registry cleaner too (Google CCleaner if you don't have it........it's a great cleanup utility). Then install the new drivers one at a time and uninstall the ones that doe't work before doing the next one.....starting with the most recent (I know you said you have the most recent but if you did not uninstall the older drivers first you can have issues due to that). If you still have the problems go back to your manufacturers website and look up Vista drivers for your accelerator.......they should work (but I would not guarantee that).

Hope that helps. :)

If you are so inclined, you may also want to vote for http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-7072 which describes primarily the Intel 965 FPS drop issue.

PS: Sorry for the necropost. I thought this needed to be mentioned in this context.

Intel Graphic systems do not support OpenGL, SL is an OpenGL platform. Vista is stable for SL, I've been running it since it came out, however it is more graphics intense. I suspect it is overloading the graphics system.

DELL produce good stable platforms, but mainly orientated towards business. Gamers should perhaps look elsewhere, unless you have a nVidia/ATI graphics card in a PCI-e or minimum AGPx8 option. DELL have been known to supply PCI-e slots but have reduced the multiplier chip capabilities from x16 to x4, so watchout for that in the system specs.
