Devastating Crash....

I'm am recovering from a devestating Windows XP crash.

Computer refused to even boot so I threw in the OEM OS disc and followed the instructions.

I was given the choice a complete re-format / install or an install that saved my "data", of course, I chose the latter.....

I now have an install that looks like a normal new one, except that I now have a folder called "My Backup -- 08-03-11 0613PM", which appears to contain all my data folders, including my "My Program" folders....

Am I right in assuming that only the data files associated with the applications are of use to me, and that the actual .exe files, since I doubt that they're associated with the registry anymore, need to be re-installed?

I don't see any utility that will take this folder and magically make my computer the way it was before the crash.....

Sure would appreciate a little help here.....I'm suprised that I can even type this...lol

Stressed? Nah......who me?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Nyles,

you will have to install all the software you were using before the crash. The "My Backup" folder contains only the program files and the user generated files. What it does not contain is the data written into the registry by the installers of each software. This registry data are needed by the most programs to run correctly.

Thanks Koyomi, that' what I thought.

There is a *very* big silver lining to this story though.....

Before the crash, I had a computer that was definitely no slouch in the performance dept:

AMD Athlon 3500+ 2.2 GHz
2 Gigs RAM
GeForce 7600 GS

In Washington state, so I was seeing 30ms ping times to LL servers...

Running lean & mean, no anti-virus, no spyware. Everyting ran beautifully except -

I was getting 3 or 4 FPS in SL all the time and could not figure out why.

Well, with a fresh Windows install I'm getting 25 - 35 FPS!!

Probably never know why....
