I am running Windows XP, and whenever I start up Second Life, I can click connect and it downloads clothing and inventory, does the precaching and all that, and then gets to the terms of service agreement window. It says "loading..." and the just sits there until I click quit (I let it set for about 10 minutes and nothing happened). Once I click quit it gives me the Microsoft Error window, asking if I want to send an error report. I click No, and then Second Life closes down, and I cry and cry. Sometimes I don't even make it to the ToS Agreement window - this is usually when I try to run full screen mode and Newview messes up. But so many people have THAT problem I thought I would ask about the one I hadn't seen yet Any advice would be most welcome. I want to start my free trial before my 7 days run out! *weep, weep, gnash, gnash*

Jupiter-
Are you perchance connecting to the internet on a dial up connection? That's certainly the most common cause of this. Unfortunately, due to the sheer volume of data we're streaming, dial up connections aren't able to fully, if at all, allow a resident to participate in Second Life.
If you do have a broadband connection (Cable and DSL being the two most common home based broadband connections) then what kind of graphics card is in your machine?
Thanks
Colin

Nooo! I do, indeed, have a 56k modem. But even though I could see how that would effect the lag and whatall once I get in the game, I wouldn't think it would take all that much bandwith to look at some ToS text Unless there are secret goings-on behind the scenes that I know not of. A pox upon my modem! And upon newview! And upon the terms of service!

Well, not only is it loading the ToS, it's also dowloading everything behind it, everything that you'd be seeing if you were able to click Accept. Try to get broadband in your area. Other than that, I think you're out of luck.

Or get a lot of patience. I've heard that you can use SL on dialup if you're willing to wait out long load times, and you set all the detail and bandwidth settings down to minimum.

That's funny though, I could have sworn I've heard about 56k-ers using SL with settings like Car just described...

WTF is C3PO supposed to be USEFUL for anyway, besides whining? Stupid piece of scrap metal would be more useful recycled as a toaster. But even that would suck, because who would want to listen to a whining wussy toaster? Is he gold plated? If that's the case he should just be melted down into gold ingots. Help the economy some, and stop being so damn useless you stupid bucket of bolts! R2 is 1,000 times more useful than your tin man ass, and he's shaped like a salt and pepper shaker FFS!

Yes, but, they were already broadband users who had gotten past the TOS window. I've done it, from satellite dialup no less. It wasn't fun, but, I had no choice. (I was on a cruise ship for 8 days in the north Atlantic). Good luck, Jupiter, I'd really love for you to get in SL!
