Problem with the new update?

I have been having a constant problem with SL since the last update. When I start SL and I reach the log-in screen, instead of the usual landscape background, it is solid black, my quit button is gone, and my password box is empty. I am certain this has everything to do with the update. If anyone can offer advice on fixing this, I would be forever grateful.
