1. I've never seen a message that clothing cannot be downloaded, any chance you can give us the exact wording?

2. Did SL used to work fine, and then suddenly started doing this, or has it never really worked?

3. What client are you using, the regular released one?

4. Can you share a few machine specs? Such as:

-- Graphics card
-- CPU model/type
-- How much RAM you have
-- Operating system

"Your clothing is still downloading. You can use the world normally, and other users will see you correctly." thats what it says but i freeze anyway and cant move around.

SL used to work completely fine until i switched my ISP but when they came out they said my internet works completely fine and isnt the cause.

Ive tried using every client and none of them work.

Graphics card - NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GX2
CPU model/type - Alienware Area-51 8500
RAM - 4GB
Operating System - Windows Vista Premium
(i dont think its my computer at all i didnt change anything except added more RAM)

it started to not work after i switched my ISP from Verizon to Comcast but Comcast came out and said my internet works completely fine so that shouldnt be the issue they said its probably becuase of the servers to SL or something

Hasn't Comcast been in the news lately about throttling bandwidth?

The message you are getting is a common one when things are loading slow through your connection. I've not had any crashes due to it that I know of however. Try setting your bandwidth lower in your preferrences.........you may be getting severe packet loss if your computer is trying to download faster than the internet or SL can deliver.

Verizon is DSL and Comcast is cable. That means a different modem would be required to access the internet. If Comcast supplied the modem try exchanging it even if they said everything is fine on their end. If you bought it yourself then check the manufacturers site for a firmware update.

Don't take Comcast's word that everything is fine..........they never admit to problems without heavy prodding from persistant customers. Keep calling them because the evidence does point at them. And you've done about everything you can do on your side of the connection. The problem is that SL has it's share of issues too.......though in this case it's looking less and less likely that they are the cause.

I get this message sometimes. I'm running COX upgraded cable internet. Usually I just stand around until it all fully loads. For me personally, the key is to do NOTHING for about 3 minutes. No walking, flying, inventory, nothing. That's usually when I go to the kitchen to make a cup of tea.

Also, re: Comcast. Have them check not just the outdoor cable box signal strength, but the indoor wall cable outlet strength as well. My cable guy came out and said, well it's fine on the outside box, but for some reason it degrades really quickly inside the house, so he had to put an amplifier on it. Works fine now.

I've seen this a few times over the last week or so. It takes about a minute or so to complete the login after I see the message, then its ok. Running XP SP2 on an AMD 4400X2 64 with EVGA 8600 GT. DSL from AT&T at 2 Mbs.

Hi again Tyler, thanks for the info. Definitely sounds like something in your networking got messed up by Comcast.

I'm wondering if you ended up with some ports not open that SL needs? It uses a lot, and not all of them come into play immediately.

TCP-443
TCP-80
TCP/UDP-12035
TCP/UDP-12036
TCP/UDP-13000-13050
TCP-12043

One could be blocked either at your local router or upstream at Comcast, tho they usually leave these open. Comcast support can help you configure your local box so these are open.

But it sounds like Comcast is throttling your bandwidth, thinking you are using Bittorrent or something. Have one of their more advanced technicians watch your link while you try to login; you should be able to get at least 500kbps out of that link. I bet their equipment is throttling you down.
