Hi folks I am hoping you can help. I have being using SL on my Vista laptop for the past twelve months with no problems at all. I have just done a windows update and now it crashes every time it starts. I though it may be a user accounts problem but I have turned that off.

The spec of my laptop is:

Vista home premium
AMD Turion 64 MK-36 2.0GHZ
4 Gig ram
ATI Radeon Xpress 1100

I know the graphics card is not great but it has being working fine for the past 12 months and I have made sure the drivers are up to date.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

There are lots of people with this same problem. The one thing that you may have missed is to make sure that you have the latest BIOS upgrades for your computer.

My problems all started with the Vista SP1 upgrade. The first thing I did was update all my drivers as you did. The problem persisted. It mostly went away once I updated my BIOS. I say mostly because it still reboots about once a week.

Note that I have an nvida Geforce video card, so that we have different video cards. I also have a Dell XTS desktop with an Intel processor. so we have completely different computers, and yet we have had similar experiences.

I hope someone else here can shed some light onto this problem. I was a big fan of Vista until all this. Now - not so much.

I tracked down the problem to Microsoft Silverlight, uninstalled that and back on and running fine now

It maybe that you do not need to uninstall Silverlight, but simply restrict the media types it will play by default. If it tires to grab all music and movie formats, it may conflict with the media pluggins in the SL Client.

Silverlight has great potential, expecially for the .NET Framework platforms/programmes. As long as it is user controlled and not bollywood or microsoft. I have found with Vista, the DEP (Denial of Executeable Programmes) element is probably more of an issue, as it is so hard to circumnavigate round. For instance, I cannot open MOV files in the Quicktime player, as when I try to open the player I get an error code 43, saying it cannot open the activex pluggin. Neither MS or Apple have an explaination.

I do not get any such errors using XP.
