Hello everyone.
I just got home from college, logged on to SL and was in NW Jessie, next to Bhodi's art gallery which I am building.
There's some floating spheres over public land, which have been decaying for a while. Creator is Bill Linden and owner is Cyanide Leviathan.
Rather than wait for them to fully decay, I bought the land under them and tried deleting them. Thing is, whenever I press delete with one of them selected, my client crashes.
I have crashed the client 3 times in a row by doing this.
The last thing that happens before the crash report window comes up is the little "ding" sound in the SL UI for the warning message that would tell me that, since my inventory is still loading, I wont be able to undelete it (or something like that). The window isnt actually shown before the crash happens.

After a few hours and a couple reboots it still crashes. Group is OpFor Industries and the only permission is group copy. They arent locked, physical, hollow, cut or scripted either. Just regular spheres with a wood texture.
Hmm, after waiting for the inventory to load it now says that the object is locked, although it doesnt seem to have the locked checkbox checked. I have now been able to delete one of them without crashing.
I tried relogging to see if it would crash again while the inventory was loading but the inventory loaded instantly, presumably because it was cached.

Any object that you don't have modify permissions for acts locked to you. So even though its not 'locked', you can't modify it so when you try and delete it you get the 'locked' warning.

And the bug sounds specifically to be deleting objects before the inventory has been loaded?

Well yes it seems that whenever I tried to delete those objects my client crashed right after the little ding sound played.
Could it be that the viewer is somehow trying to display two windows at once (one being the locked warning, the other being the no-undelete warning) and they are somehow interfering with each other?
I've had dozens of windows pop up on me all at once in several occasions without the viewer crashing so i dont know how that could be a problem.

When you delete something, it gets put into your inventory under Trash. I suppose there is some error check that handles deleting objects when your inventory hasn't loaded yet, because I know that you can do that without crashing.

But when the object is owned by someone else and you don't have permission to change it, it enters your inventory then gets tagged ";(no modify)". I'm guessing that the bit of code that tags it doesn't have the error check for a still-loading inventory.

Just a guess though...

As far as the item being locked, it shouldnt prevent him from deleting it. H e bought the land underneath them. That should make the deletable, tho not modifiable. So it sounds to me like the inventory loading is almost certainly the root of the problem. Not that I am an expert, or know what the hell I am talking about. So, why am I even posting this?

Yeah I wasn't clear Devlin. If you try to delete a locked object you own you get a warning message with the options yes, delete it or no don't. If you attempt to delete someone elses object overy our land, whether its locked or just not modifiable by you, you get the same warning with the same options. The game treats an object you can't modify as 'locked'. You can still delete it but you get a warning message heh.

And yeah I think the inventory loading is where the problem lies.

Just letting you all know, the bug is still happening. Can anyone with long inventory loading times confirm it?

*bump*
This crash still happens in v1.1
Should I file a new bug report?

Hah, it happens with all non owned objects AFAIK. I guess Linden isnt too concerned about this bug since you americans have more bandwidth than god and dont have to wait half an hour for the inventory to load.

The release notes say they fixed some minor crashes so if I get the chance i'll test it again.
