I am about to build a machine and am looking at choice between Intel Core2 Quads and the i7's... the thought being the i7's will 'future proof' me better than the Core2 (budget and some comments about trouble running SL on the i7 extreme editions keep me away from them). Anyone had/have experience with the Intel® Core™ i7 Processor?

But can I avoid shooting self in foot, while going for increased processing power?

Yeah... I am trying to decide if I can justify the increased cost. And if I will regret being 'future proofed' too early.
In other words I am wondering if folks have had trouble running SL on say an i7 920 chip w/ a GeForce 9800 nVidia video card (most likely w/ Vista 64 bit)?
The video card alone shouldn't cause trouble... I see posts of successful SL use of just the card. But not many mentions of the use of the Intel i7 920 CPU. I don't expect SL to be able to take full advantage of all the speed (so many factors involved there)... but I also would hate to have a show stopping conflict with SL not working at all with the above combination.
As I continue my research I see this is probably not likely... but, as I say, I would hate to design a machine around the i7 chip only to see that the main virtual world I work in won't run on it. I do a lot of work with Blender, GIMP & with in-world tools such as Sculpt Studio, etc... as well as regular multi-tasking while I work on projects. I have gone beyond what my laptop can comfortably keep up with... so is time for new desktop.

In her Profile picks she has the equipment listed in her i7 920 computer set up. Zoey is very cool, so maybe you can ask her a few questions.
