I have to access SL via mobile broadband service on my laptop. The service is capped at 5GB/month. Had it for two months now. The connection is fast, no lag and graphics are great. Only problem is: doing anything (teleporting, being in a crowd) but just standing around at home or IM'ing friends gobbles up the MB's and I'm so afraid of going over the cap (or even using large chunks of MB's on one log in.)
Does anyone who connects via mobile broadband (in the US) care to share their experiences or any tips for staying online longer and doing more stuff without watching the MB counter with fear ?

I'm current using mobile internet access too so I need to be careful if I go over my download allowance. So far the best program I could find is Rokario Software - Free Bandwidth Monitor Lite Edition at least it's a) free, b) small and c) doesn't require that dumb .net crap installed which other similar applications require. The only problem I've found is it doesn't accumulate downloads in the statistics however it creates a log file of previous sessions so you should be able to work it out.

Set your login location to some very empty sim. Go to the advanced menu (Ctrl Alt d) goto rendering > Types > and grab the tippy top of the menu so that you can tear it off. With that open, uncheck all that you can tolerate having off. Clouds, particles, water, grass, ground, tree and if you can stand it 'sky' as well. This will leave you with downloading the avatars and prims and the surface patch. It will speed your frame rate too. In Preferences, set your render distance to 64 meters. turn off the auto start media( and don't use it unless you must).
THEN you can TP to whatever location you want to go to without DLing tons of stuff while you get your settings tweaked.
