Hello. I'm having the "ToS doesn't load" problem, went to the forums to look for a solution, and noted it's a problem that happens with dial-up connections. But the problem is, I dfon't have a dial-up connection! Here are my full specs:

Connection: 256k DSL line

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Barton
256 MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX 440 SE - with latest drivers
Windows XP Service Pack 1
DirectX 9.0b

If anyone could please help me with this, I'd most appreciate it. Thanks in advance

PS: here goes a picture of my net traffic if I leave the SL ToS loading. the adapter speed shown is 100 MBPS (the lan card maximum), so, 1% = 1 Mbit, and halfway 0 and 0,5% would be my 256k...

And it's NOT a lan/traffic issue, because if I load pages, stream music and etc. WHILE leaving the SL window open, all my traffic is fine. it's just SL that for some reason is not using my entire bandwidth (and I already tried changing my "maximum bandwidth" configuratrion... situatio is the same either if I leave it at 50 or 1000).

Hey there. E-mail Support@SecondLife.com and tell them what's going on, they should be able to give you a reply in a few days. (I know that you're on a trial...they should be able to help you extend the trial so you get full use of it.) It's a weekend, so, they won't get the e-mail until Monday.

Good luck, I hope it works soon. :)

Have you tried re-downloading the client just to be safe? I think I heard of this before, and it turned out to be a bad installer.

Beyond that, I wonder what your upstream connection is. Try this speed test to find out what your upstream and downstream bandwidth is like. What does it say for each?

Thanks you all for your kinds replies. I hope I can get this fixed until Tuesday, because I'll leave my state on a trip for 2 weeks, and if I can't get SL to work by then, I'll have to cancel my trial and try to re-make it again another time when I get back.

Anyway, I just sent an e-mail to the address shown, and I hope to get an answer soon.

by the way... yes, I tried to re-install it, and recently I just re-installed my Windows XP. No use, still same problem.

And my test at the adress you gave me gave a 226 down/98 up result... could that be the problem?

Anyway, thanks again, Catherine and James.

Yeah, it's possible. That's a pretty low-capacity upstream connection, but it should still be managable. To be honest, I'm not actually certain what actually CAUSES the "crashing at Licence Agreement on narrowband" issue.

It wouldn't be some kind of bandwidth test, since I think they'd make the error message somewhat more verbose than that. It's definitely a bug, the question is, what is it doing that fails on low-bandwidth connections?

Now, some people have had luck installing SL on a broadband connection and then running it on dialup or ISDN. I mean, it's not really usable, but it DOES run. I don't suppose you know anyone who would be up for letting you lug your computer over and plug in for 5 minutes or so? :)

The other possibility is that your crash issue is unrelated to the normal one. What happens, does it just suddenly lock up your system? Stop running? Is there an error message?

Well, I do have a friend with a 512k Cable line... maybe this is the only exit...

Try it and see what happens. If it still shows up, you at least know it's not the connection.

I went there, but his computer is too old, couldn't run SL... tried to take my CPU there and I wasn't able to configure it to use his connection... something with his ISP I guess. Problem is, here in Brazil there's very few people with connections above 256k, and I don't think I know anybody else who has a 512k+ line... (512k and above lines are VERY expensive here) *sigh*

Well, okay... what happens though? Does it just crash, or does it crash and lock up your computer? Just disappear?

No, it just never loads the license agreement... a very similar behaviour to the ones noted on previous threads by people with dialup lines... I can still alt+tab or quit SL by clicking the "quit" button on the License Agreement window.

Hmmm just a wild guess. But because you mention the problems with dial up..
Try a ping to www.secondlife.com.
Maybe your international connection is slow, and SL thinks you are on dial up?
My ping from Europe is around 200 ms, and it works fine....
256 k to your provider doestn guarantee 256 k to the US.....

Well... now I'm guessing there's something really wrong with my account. because a good friend from Holland with a 1024/512 DSL line tried to log in to my account and he has the SAME problem as I did...

what on heaven's name could be the problem?
