Quad CPU Usage - Image in thread

Just out of sheer interest I thought I'd post this image.

I had Task Manager running on my Q6700 whilst running SL in full screen mode under Windows 7

As you can see, I quit SL and my CPU usage went back to zero on all 4 cores.

But SL seems to have been using all 4 cores (which is good, as I kinda thought the 1st core would get all the load and the others would be idle)

I would assume you can set the processor affinity for each app that's running in 7, just like you can in Vista and XP. Is that not correct?

As long as you haven't set it to do otherwise, SL will use all four cores in Vista and XP. I'm not sure what you're trying to say is different in 7.

If I'm not mistaken, programs have to be written to utilize individual processors on its own...

I think windows automatically spreads the load through all 4 cores, unless you change the affinity...now I don't know what kind of advantage you would get by forcing sl to run on 1 core, unless you are running processor intense applications...

anyone else have a take on this?

I think the texture decode stuff runs in a separate thread. If you're on a 4-core system and do mess with the affinity, which I'm not sure will actually produce any noticable effect, you should mask it to run on 2 cores, not just one.

Wow I just posted something - but I am using a Duo core and SL uses a ton of CPU as well. So not sure why its being such a hog...

SL has a "Run Multiple Threads" option that I think is enabled by default on 1.22 and later client versions (someone tell me if I'm wrong) so it divides and conquers well. I just recently went from running XP Pro SP3 to the Win7x64 RC. Opening up the 64 bit capabilities of my machine has really woken it up, doubled my SL frame rate, and overall performance even when running other apps like Blender and such. (^_^)

The other night, I randomly put it to the test::

Someone asked me about another avatar being my alt. I decided to log her in and greet them just to put a spin on things. I was a bit amazed that I didn't have to roll back my graphics settings. I used to have to for XP to behave. So, I decided to roll back my graphics and break loose with an alt raid in my favorite sandbox. In the end, I had 6 accounts running at once before I noticed an FPS issues. By then, my brain was lagging more than my computer and I had no idea which avatar was in which window. (=_=)

AMD64 + Win7x64 + SL = Happy Immy. =^-^=

Haha, nice, Imnotgoing. The most concurrent viewer instances I've ever tried to run was three. Now you've got me wondering just how many I COULD have if I really wanted to. It might just be time to resurrect some long dormant alts. :)

The reason I posted this is cos it's so annoying the lack of any actual information on these forums about hardware.

Some say SL using multi core CPU's others say it does not make any difference.

Some say SL does not benefit from SLI graphics whilst some say it does.

etc etc etc.........

If you are listening Linden :)

I would BEG YOU, and it would really help all of us "techy" people (and others to) if you could put together some kind of benchmark we can run to simulate an SL experience.

Perhaps some "in machine" simulation of a complex built SL environment with a long flythru (or something like this)

So apart from our varying bandwidth variations (which I know can't be taken into account) at least we'd have some set text everyone can run to access the best hardware and settings to get the best SL experience.

PLEASE :)

Truly. At the moment I'm still using a pair of $50 video cards until I see the best of the best Nvidia card for shadow rendering filter though the complaints that are bound to show up in these forums. (^_^)

I rarely play the numbers game with my hardware. I only ask it to work, make pretty, and do it fast. I only start looking at the numbers when it's time to solve problems. Sadly, LL isn't prone to giving out numbers. (T_T)
