name change

my boyfriend started this account as a joke to a friend. His friends name is jean cook, well he did it to tease him how he cant get in on a beta, and well. I played the game on the account and obviously liked it, though I didnt think I would, and well. I really want to change my name, is there a way I can ?

Send email to [email]support@lindenlab.com[/email]. I'm not sure that we have a process in place for hanlding this, but I think we'll have to make one.

I'd like to make a suggestion regarding name changes. While I think they probably should be allowed, I think there should be some restrictions...

* can only change name one time per [some time period]

and

* profile window will have your old name on it for [ some time period after the name change ]

I dont think though without my boyfriend knowning computers-- like if I personaly tried signing up I would have been acepted, I know only html. I know nothing about computers otherwise LOL

Oh, definitely!

And even without "weird" circumstances, some number of people are going to want to change their name from time to time. The only reason I suggested the specific limitations that I suggested was to keep abuse to a minimum. No, I don't think your situation would in any way be an abuse or lead to abuse or be to hide from the consequences of abuse -- but I think that's what a lot of other people in the future are going to have in mind when they want to change their name.

Does that make any sense?

I can finally get rid of this boring name and have one of the cool ones like everyone else.

I totally agree.....let's not leave ourselves open for more ways to cause abuse. You all know, as recent events have proven, it will happen.

I didn't make myself very clear there -- what I meant was that at the top of the profile window would be your new name, and then directly under that would be something like:
The Avatar Formerly Known As [old name here]

And I think that line should stay there for a decent amount of time -- say a month even.
