Hello,
So I just finished installing the Second Life update and began getting graphical errors. I tried several things to fix the problem such as restarting, reinstalling, and updating my graphics drivers, but unfortunately nothing is seeming to work. I was curious if anyone else was having this issue or if it's just me. I have also included a picture below:

System specs might be useful.

What video driver version were you using and what version are you using now?

Does the error happen in the current 1.21 release version, or just the 1.22.11 Release Candidate?

I'm not sure which version I had before, but I'm running a NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G for notebooks v179.48 (http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_notebook_winvista_179.48_beta.html)

The problem did not exist while I was playing 1.21 but once I updated to 1.22.11 is when it began happening.

EDIT: Apparently it's my whole avatar in which is black, and it's public to some other players. I feel like a walking shadow.

You can have the regular release version and the release candidate installed at the same time.

The release version is currently 1.21, while the Release Candidate version is 1.22.11,

If you don't have the current release version installed, you could install it, and see if that fixes your problem.

If you haven't cleared your cache, you could try that.

If you didn't uninstall SL before reinstalling it, you could try that.

You might be able to revert to the previous drivers.

What kind of laptop is it?

Have you searched these forums for

black avatar

and other such search terms?

I did clear my cache, but it didn't help. I'm starting to think this is not a client graphical issue because everyone on SL is seeing my avatar as black and I've tried rebaking and everything else I've read on the forums.

I FIXED THE PROBLEM! Apparently when editing one's appearance on a secondary monitor the black avatar bug occurs. Just put Second Life back onto the primary monitor and edit appearance and do a rebake and all was good! Thanks for the help though!

This is a common problem, which if my memory still worked right, I would have recognized instantly. I'm pretty sure there was a similar thread not too long ago on it, even to the having a similar picture shown, but I drew a blank about it.

Glad you got your problem solved.

Note to self: black avatar = ask about dual monitors.

Actually, asking about dual monitors should probably be a standard question for all client graphics problem, it can't hurt to ask.

It's normal for client problems with one's avatar's skin and clothes to appear on other people's viewers as well because the composited verson of skin and clothing textures is produced on a user's client, uploaded to LL, and sent out to the rest of the users. This is an example of distributed processing, and it keeps the machines at LL's end of things from having to composite the textures for everyone.

When avatars skin and clothing textures are composited locally, they are applied locally, and uploaded to LL, and then redownloaded to one's client. You can see this when you put on a new skin, for example, first you see the new skin clearly, applied locally, then it's uploaded and sent back to your viewer, at which point your just applied avatar gets blurry for a bit and reappears properly.

1.22 became the official viewer earlier today.
