I think this is a known issue, just wanted to post and see if anyone knows a fix. I wanted to give away some free stuff at my land and I set permissions to allow anyone to copy. All looks good in edit menu, but they cant be copied. I cant sell for L$zero because L$1 appears to be the minimum price. I dont want to sell these things, any work around?

I was fighting this stupidness myself awhile ago... the way I (think) I got around it was by right clicking the object I wanted to alter the permissions for while it was IN INVENTORY, setting them there, and rezzing from inventory. Don't even use the edit menu's permissions, heh. But don't get pissy at me if I'm wrong....I *think* this works!

I had the same problem with all my Christmas freebies, Loki. Ended up having to set everything to sell for L$1. Would love to get this working so Free to Copy is really Free to Copy.

The permission system is definitely flaky. I can't be certain, but it appears that if EVER anything in an object's contents, or a texture applied to an object, had more restrictive copy permissions than the object itself, the object's own copy permissions become restrictive. I have had to rebuild objects from scratch because of this.

Did you try editing the permissions with the object(s) in inventory and not in the edit window?

I found a fix to this problem, so I decided to pass it along. You can give things away via a notecard!
Simply create a new note and drag the inventory object you want to give away to the note. Anyone you give the note too will be able to copy the object to their inventory.
I am going to make a note with the free items and make a note card dispenser so people can click to recieve the card and the objects in the card.

It's still possible to do Free to Copy, but... EVERYTHING in the object's contents needs to be marked the same way. Including in any child objects.
If you've got an item in inventory that says (no copy) you might still be able to copy it if the main object allows copy. The (no copy) may simply mean that the object has something in its contents that is marked no copy.

The explanation regarding differing permissions of component prims makes a lot of sense -- but the hover text still needs to be changed. Often I hover over something that looks interesting and it says "Free to Copy" -- but the Take Copy menu item is not active. At least now I know why....thanks!

Nay if you want to give away an object that needs to be copied, you have to set all the nested items to copy. You can see this easily with a gun...put a bullet on it that has a script that isn't set to copy, then give somebody else the gun. The user will only be able to shoot one bullet.
What gets a lot of people is that the creator of the item does not have the permissions applied when he/she uses it. In the above scenario, the owner can shoot all the bullets they want. Then when you give it away it will seem to stop working for some reason. Fix the perm on the bullet script, there ya go.
