My partner and I have been using SL for over a month now, no real problems at all. Suddenly last night, when he logged on, his home sim appeared for a moment, then he got strange graphics of some of his inventory showing all over the screen; then a small pic of an avatar head. He suspected a virus, ran a check, couldn't find anything; he uninstalled and reinstalled SL; didnt help. Has anyone got any ideas?

Random shapes all over, when it has not happened in the past, generally means your graphics card is overheating or has suffered some sort of damage.
You should open up your computer and see if the graphics card's fan is clogged with dust or maybe not spinning right.
There is no threat of a virus, it simply would not interact with SL in the way you described.

The faces has been known to be seen with issues with some graphics drivers as well in relation to some options. Were any graphics options changed before this started happening? if not, safe bet it MAY be a hardware overheat issue, though you should see more graphics corruption if it was an overheating situation.
