With what little info your giving us, it could be a number of things. Here are some hints that have worked for others in the past.

Turn off all software firewalls and antivirues. If you can log in after doing that, then open the firewall.

Reinstall the software.

make sure you have latest drivers.

I know there are more and i'm sure others will provide them. This should get you started.

special if your password was over 8 characters long, it was truncated to be 8 characters, so put in the first 8 characters and see if that works.

k. By step
1. check if you are in the right hours.. what is your time zone?
2. check if you have the right version
2.a IF 2. == TRUE did you do a fresh install? if not.. uninstall.. delete the folder and reinntall fresh.
2.b IF 2 == FALSE uninstall your current and install fresh (good version)
3. Check your caps.
5. Check if you are connected to the internet.
6. check your firewall (some of them are a bitch)
7. Double check your password in the e-mail they sent you.
8. If all else fails.. e-mail the Lindens (peter linden) fromt he SAME account you registered and give him your SL name and "old" password. ask him (without yelling) to give you the correct password because your is not working. Also, to check your account status.
9. You should be on your way.

Have fun, next time try not to burst out.

Also, some other useful information would be, what type of internet connection do you have, what is your ISP, and what OS are you running? (Win98? Win2000? WinME? WinXP?)

hmmmm... xp home or corporate? i'm not sure which, but i know at least one of them comes with a built-in firewall package of sorts, and i believe it's on by default... you may wanna look in yer manual and figure out how to turn it off, or at least change its settings...

personally, i have a hardware firewall (Linksys BEFSR41 router), and by forwarding ports 12020-12050 and 13000-13050 to my computer, SL works great. i have no clue how the XP firewall thingy works, but if you can just forward those ports, that would be ideal -- leaving most of the protection of a firewall intact, while opening it just enough to not interfere with SL.

well there's your problem. that win98 box most likely doesn't understand that your computer needs to have bidirectional access on the ports i mentioned above. i'm not exactly sure how SL connects to the servers initially, but i'd wager that this is definitely a large part of your problem. can you connect your SL computer directly to the internet briefly, and see if you can log in then?

nonono. i'm not saying to install SL on the 98 box. i'm saying to DISCONNECT the 98 box from the internet connection, and plug your main SL machine DIRECTLY into the connection (make sure to configure it appropriately too :P) and see if you still can't connect to SL*. if you can't, then the problem may be an issue with your ISP. if you can connect when directly plugged in, then the problem lies in the way the 98 box redirects packets.

*see pict-o-matic(tm) diagram below:

such is the cost of troubleshooting :p

personally, i wouldn't have a network that hinges on an ancient win98 box in the first place, but i'm a perfectionist when it comes to my computers, so hey :p
