ok here goes it..... Hubby and I both were selected as beta testers for SL, but we can't both log on at the same time. Both of our PC's are running on DSL through a netwrok which consists of two D-link netwrk cards, a SMC Barricade model #7004VBR and a Speedstream 5360 ethernet ADSL external modem. What happens when we both try to log on is.... if I am already on SL and he logs on, I will lose connection or I am unable to move. OR if he is logged on first and I try to log on I can't get past the verifying protacols. I have talked to several different people about the problem and no one seems to know what is going on. Any ideas on how to get around this problem? We would both like to share in the expience together if at all possible.
Thanks for any and all help,
Jas :)

something similar happened to me the one time i was at zoli's house and we were logged in. it was like our av's were siamiesed twinned, so if one crashed then shortly after the other would. the really strange thing was that at one point the server started sending us the others information, like it should z that he had all my money, and me his negative balance... but it gets better. towards the end of the night, i was getting im's sent to him, and he was getting once that were being sent to me. it just qualified as wierd.

I have done it with a linksys router. But you HAVE to set your network to 1\2 of your alowed bandwith... So that one user does not bump of the other. (Lagout\timeout)

I had this last week when my roomate was logged in at the same time I was. And he's a network junkie, so we tried everything.

The solution for us was to upgrade from 384k to 768k. The problem utterly vanished.

and Nexus.... how did you go about splitting the bandwith on your router box?

Lyn and I run 2 SL computers now with no trouble at all.

We have road runner cable with a D-Link router

<<edit>> Dlink DI-704

Or... first the BIGGEST problem SL has is PPL that don't tweak the bandwith. Mine for example... at full throttle is 155k/sec, if I set it higher, I get HUGE lose.... LOSS = LAG... i'll say it again LOSS = LAG. anyways.... when my firend and I played we had our seting at 75k/sec each. 75 + 75 = 150k sec... + 5 crap factor.

Ok last night I tried to log both pc's in using various combinations of the bandwith and it didn't work. So are there any other suggestions? Sometimes one of the pc's would make it past the log in and the other would get hung up at the verifying protocols or actually go through the log in process and say that the server was having technical problems or closed. I am totally clueless as to what I should try next. Lindens? Anyone?

It's possible your DSL connection just isn't quite enough to run 2 SL games on it. Do you know what speed your DSL connection is?

I believe they upgraded their DSL service to get a higher speed. This of course costs more.

Ok the highest you should set your network settings is 100 (the lowest option) anything higher is more than your bandwith (200k * 2 = 400k). You could first select 100, then custom and then adjust things down more.

Really though I think your internet speed is not sufficient to run 2 instances of SL at the same time.

I tend to agree, that speed is rather slow for 2 pc's running any kind of high traffic applications, then to try to get good performance from them. I was (b4 my move) on a 768k dsl and If I ran anything in the backround behind SL, my performance dropped bad. Loss/Lag (thx Nash lol) I even had a file downloader running grabbing at the most 2 files(mp3 or avi) and it hurt the SL experience.

Now that Im on cable with Lynnix, we both can run SL and a file downloader in the backround each with minimal difference in SL performance. So I'd say your troubles come from the speed of your internet.

That's exactly what I was trying to say. We had 384k DSL, and it was just impossible unless one of us stayed in one region, keeping their bandwidth to a minimum. And that's with setting your network in SL to 100; I've noticed that SL will spike its bandwidth 50% or more over whatever you told it to in crowded areas.

We upgraded our DSL service to 768 (call your DSL provider, may not be available in all areas), and the problems vanished. We're both running 300 now with now worries.

Also note that you have to give yourself plenty of overhead (like we did: 600 vs. 768). This covers various things like packet size, TCP/IP overhead, etc., as well as that nasty overuse glitch.

Oh, and as a postscript: It's easier to call people by their first names, or first and last. I don't tend to answer to Epoch, particularly when Nada is around. ^_^

LOL sorry about that Yuniq it didn't occur to me that I had put only Epoch until after I had already posted. I will try to get ahold of my DSL provider to see what it would take to upgrade it. Thanks everyone for all of the help/input!! You guys are great:D
