Which Portable?!...

Hi,

I need some advice. I would like to know IF a portable/laptop computer may be used for Second Life?. Best Buy technicians say "not really"..."maybe"...it will heat up too much and the graphics card will not be powerful enough, there will be laging besides the heat issue.

IF a portable can be used could you possibly tell me WHICH one to get?. Best Buy told me tonight, the following one would "most probably do the job" a GATEWAY Intel Centrino Duo with Core 2 processor T5750.
(I'm translating from French): 2.0 GHz, 2 Go memory, hard drive disk 200Go, Windows Vista Home, Premium SP1 64-BIT, Graphics card 512Mo, and ATI Radeon HD 2600.

To me, this is a lot of technical jargon so please keep your answer "user friendly" ;-)

Any info will be very much appreciated.

Thanks to all! :-)

they are mostly correct, and thats a ok start, probably cost too much too

the T5750 cpu is decent enough ... its middle of the road

2 gigs of memory is a little short for vista + SL, both are hogs, id max it out (most likely 4 gigs), theres also a question of the speed of the ram, big box doesnt like to tell you, but its usually the slowest they can put in there

ATI and SL (more so open GL) really dont like each other, and the hd 2600 is kind of the low end ... id at least get the equivalent in a nvidia card

taking a glance over at big box i think i see the one your looking for, and its about 1300

just looking around newegg a second spits out this model

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220361

Asus is a pretty old company that usually makes the top notch components gateway and others buy (if your lucky)

17 inch screen, slightly faster 2.24 ghz cpu, but more importantly running at a faster frontside bus, so more crap can get in and out at almost 2x the speed

has 4 gigs of 800mhz ram (instead of 667 or even 533mhz ram)

a 120 gig larger hard drive

blueray

and a 512 meg geforce 9600m GS (while it could be a tad better) that will, quite frankly, kick that HD2600 right in the balls

and its $1550

another option, with a lesser known brand

http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/store/configurator.aspx?mid=330

which is very similar, same disk access as the gateway, basic dvd-cd burner

but it has what is currently the fastest laptop video card on the market ... the 9600M GT annd a 2.5 ghz cpu

for 1489, drop in a 2.8 ghz cpu and it goes to 1700+

oh and yes, any laptop made like after 1990 gets hot, just dont let the vents get plugged up (like setting it on a blanket on your bed) and get one of those little 30$ "chill pads" if you plan on doing marathon sl sessions, they are meant to be portable, not snuggable

bah its not even that new!

i made it out of cardboard and 17000 ttl chips bought at auction ... it uses a rubber band and a sony dual shock controller motor for a clock generator

it runs just fine, but it sucks when the power goes off because you have to load bios by hand using all those darn toggle switches and incandescent lamps

seriously tho

my desktop is a do it your selfer, and currently has zero asus parts in it, the previous generation of this machine was almost all asus, and it was awesome, the fastest mainboard / video card / other stuff on the market at that time, and it lasted forever

id still have it today but i cracked the main board fighting with a heatsink

the reason i dont have asus now is simply a matter of a screwed up order for my dad's computer, tiger direct sent the wrong board, then said i could keep this one for 25% off ... i needed a new one anyway so why not, its a gigabyte, they make laptops too and they are of the same quality, i just have no idea where to get them

for another opinion of asus heres chosen few raving about his new G70 ... its nearly 2x the price as the one i pointed out but it has a beefier cpu, and a stronger video card (even tho it is a 8000 series), personally in that case i would have gone with the battalion i mentioned second, but to each their own
