Can any linden check chat logs freely?

My friends lately have been feeling threatened that an individual who plays on an alt, claiming to be a linden as well, can sign on as their linden account and open and freely view and monitor any user's chat logs freely at their will? Without reason or verification.

If I can get an official answer that is a yes or a no, I can tell my friends. I don't want to say any names and let things get out of hands into drama city, I just want to know official answers. Also, can Linden staff actively sign on other alt avatars and play them freely, and say theoretically use their Linden account to abuse their powers on that alt? (Theoretically, I'm not accusing anyone, I trust the Lindens for the most part, I just want official answers to this that I can forward to my friends.) Thanks.

Sorry, butyou won't get official answers here. Maybe submit a ticket to support?

Lindens do have alts, many of them had their alts before they became Lindens. I believe they have access to chatlogs using godmode when logged in as Lindens, not sure whether they have access to it on their alts, I'd guess not for most of them.
Also I suspect not all Lindens have access to all powers, some just do administration duties and only log in for team meetings etc.

No idea as to the answer to your questions, but I know what I would do, take a log of the conversation where this was stated and file an AR.

Pretending to be a Linden will get you in a whole pile of deep doodoo.

It's long been speculated that LL can pull chat logs for anyone at any time, but I don't think anyone outside LL knows for sure. From a technical standpoint, there's certainly no reason they couldn't, and it's of course arguable that they've got every right to do so, since all the data in the system does belong to them. (You own the copyright on what you type, but they own the actual data you put on their servers.) But from a logistical standpoint, I'm not sure how sensible it would be for them to try to archive every last piece of text typed by every single user. So my feeling has always been they could, and they very well might, but they probably don't.

If you're concerned, the solution is the same in SL as it is everywhere else. Don't broadcast private information across the Internet. There's really no other answer than that.

As to whether or not Lindens can use their god powers when logged in as alts, I don't know. I know the answer used to be definitely yes, at least to a degree. Most of the stuff that's currently in the Advanced menu, for example, used to be Linden-only. Even the simplest Advanced functions, like disabled camera constraints and unlimited select distance, were very godlike before we mere mortals were allowed to use them. They only made that stuff accessible to us after someone stumbled upon what was then "god mode" through a security hole. Hopefully, the server side functions that we can't access do require an actual Linden login, but it's possible they merely require a special viewer that we don't have.

I suspect that even if they can use god powers with their alts, they probably don't. The Lindens whose alts I know do NOT want to talk shop in any way, shape, or form when they're logged in as their alts. The reason they have their alts in the first place is to get away fr0m the job, and be just like the rest of us for a while.

My guess is this Alt who claims to be a Linden is a jerk who is nobody. Log their threat and send in an AR.

Well in the reality case, aren't most Lindens employees, they don't own crap. Only the owners. But yeah You're all right, should place a ticket... All my friends are afraid to talk to each other because this person supposedly can dig up those chat logs and use them against everyone, thought I don't believe it. This person makes being a linden sound like having an alt god account that's just fun to have around, service no purpose to LL.

Echoing everyone else's sentiments: AR, mute, and move on. A legitimate Linden, even on an alt, would never stoop to the level of unprofessional behavior that this guy is exhibiting - not if they want to keep their job afterward.

Linden's can monitor your IMs.

In 04 i was suspended for something i said in an IM, seconds after i said it, and just for saying it.

Thankfully Daniel Linden is gone now.

A Linden staff member could be logged in with multiple accounts at once, just like the rest of us.

I've been able to hear anyone's IMs ever since I was bitten by a radioactive spider.

A Linden doing this would probably get fired pretty quickly.

/me agrees with the others that recommend ARing and moving on. LL gets really, REALLY grumpy when non-Lindens claim to be Lindens.

I *highly* doubt that LL would give unfettered access to sensitive chat logs to every one of their employees. I would think that there would be only specific people who could easily retrieve that information, and only for a really good reason. At least I would hope.

That's how it should be, as I've known people that told their credit information to relatives over IM's. Despite how stupid that is in the first place, the fact that a linden, who some seem shady IMO if they really can act like this, then that's dangerous.

Well, if they created the game then yeah they can do pretty much anything you can imagine, I believe. 100% control of everything if you will.

Second Life is extremely un-private anyways, I'm not even surprised if residents can spy on your IMs and chat logs and stuff.
