This has to be the strangest error...

It happens randomly and not very often, but when it does it sure is very annoying since the only solution seems to be a reboot of the computer!

Follow the link to see it fullsize, because it isn't just fancy discolights like you might think...

If someone can tell me what is causing this and possibly how to fix it, I'd be grateful!

My system looks like this:
Vista 32bit
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 3ghz
Ram: 4 gig of ram (one of which is reserved for hardware)
Video: nVidia GeForce 8800GTX

- and yes, I keep my drivers updated.

Urge you to check your ram with memtest86, thats how it looks when memory is corrupt or your vid card ram is dying , twice i had this in SL and only SL, it was those 2 to blame.

Also youre not running multiple screens right? you get that easy if its not main monitor.

I do get frequent memory errors. Toyed with Vista's built in superfetch, but it's no change whether it's on or off, so I just left it back on.

I'll give that memtest a try, I was suspecting something was going bad with either the videocard or the ram - which is really crappy, since the PC is almost brand new...

Yeh, whenever i upgrade ram im always testing it first, cause if you copy files with a faulty ram it usually ends up corrupting the file unreable or just wierd at some places, wich isnt fun ~.~.

2 other things i could think up is reason, but dont really see that could be the cause, watt to vid card = not sufficent, and overheating, but yeh i doubt its that really, ram test..is..realllly... slow btw.

Fastest way to test is to take out all you can and do one at a time or two, memtest should give no errors, if it has alooot, return it immidatly, long warrenty on them but they can be "dead" when you get them and wont notice for a long time.

Whatever it is, it sort of looks cool... I know that's no consolation, but maybe you could PrtScrn it and call it "art"... ;)

shader bugs

I get those sometimes, not like that but similar. Your graphics card crashed with the buggy shaders. Happens to my bf too. Reboot the machine to reset the graphics card (you might have to power off and wait a moment).

Well the video card sure as heck should be strong enough to handle SL....

As for overheating, I have an exhaust at the side of the case right by the videocard and the core temp of the videocard is usually sitting around 150-160F when running SL, which I read somewhere is just fine.

Ohhh I'm gonna rip my hair out if that videocard is faulty! Hope it's "just" the ram.

Thanks Thili, do appreciate your time :)

Hmmm... so possibly if I mess around with some of the shader settings (through the Advanced menu) it will stop doing this to me!

I hate having to reboot, drives me batty! LOL

Its a new feature I guess.

Someone else replied on the blog with the exact same problem:
"No, i did not have show updates on and the triangles (and other mathematical things) are not blue, but they have all colours
….
Actually blocking my sight completely"

And I also have that problem, it happened to me yesterday, first time I ever saw it.

So that makes 3 people that have it on same day, there will be more people, this must be some freaky bug.
I have also a 8800 card

Screenshots help alot, debug can make things in SL look very odd, however the one in this thread is not one of those effects.

Here is how the fancy disco lights look for me:

http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/7776/graphicbugpn2.jpg

I logged out and restarted SL and the problem was still there (did that 3 times)
Then I shut my pc down and after restart the problem was gone
And still seems to be gone for now, hope it never comes back

Well I ran the memtest - let it sit through a whole movie, so it's run the test quite a few times and it brings back absolutely no errors.

In a minute I'll run a stresstest on the system - one that should locate the problem if there is any.

I'll let you know if it finds anything.

It can't be your computer, more people have the exact same problem, since these updates here.

And I'm sure nothing here is wrong with my PC, its only a few months old too.

Check whether it looks anything like these examples-then we'd have a new case-now NVidia cards got it, too...

If you have a diffrent vid card laying around test it, if its not memory errors then im pretty sure its your vid card next on checklist, i run SL with these nvidia's 6600,6800,7900,7950,8800 320mb, 8800 640mb, and none of them has this, except when one of the pc's had faulty ram 'course or ran in wrong monitor (not main).

One that i seen similar to this screenshot was when my old radeon9800 pro was about to die, ram faulty on it = warranty after many years yay full money back, but that card was old and not to fun with SL anyway.

Dozens of people with ATI cards get these triangle things and their video cards are neither overheating nor dying, so I wouldn't rule out a viewer glitch. On my desktop with an ATI X600, I get these, too, if I have VBO enabled and my card ist fine. I would just find it scary if an issue LL can't fix (it's been going on for months) now starts including NVidia cards, too.

Well it sure is comforting to hear that loads of others get it too, because although there's still a year and a half of warranty on the video card - living without one for 14 days is rough!
And I also would really be surprised if mine was dying when not overheating after so short. There's also a reason it's never a no name-brand I buy...

Anyway, I've been running some benchmarks and they all look fine, except when running the memory benchmark, it comes up with an error that it doesn't have enough memory to run and to shut down some applications - LOL!
That might be a settings things though...
Since memtest found absolutely nothing.

I wonder, if this error only happens to Vista users? Vista uses memory way different from XP, so I wouldn't be surprised.

No it's not like these, I remember getting those with an older videocard of mine and while still running on XP, and they were easily fixed with a simple relog.
The problem that I have NEEDS a reboot of the whole PC to go away.
Simply relogging from SL won't fix it.
