I was flying around a little bit and i noticed that the light ahead of me on the map was turning when i hit the right and left keys, but on my screen i actually kept going straight. I flew straight past all civilization and normally on the parts where you fly too far and you automatically get teleported to your house, instead of being teleported i just kept flying right throught it with no problem. Then right after that none of the menu options etc. would work so i had to shut it down for the night, unfortunetly after only being on it for 5 minutes  (. I hope this made sense, i just got off work, pretty tired. bye 4 now )

Yep this is what's known as a black hole in SL. It's when you get hit by lag so bad, you lose all your controls, but you get to still see the land, and eventually just the sea, fly by as you shake around in fear at what is to come! And what comse? You quitting out of the game =P It happens to all of us at least once, don't worry bout it

I've found when I fly off into the Void / black hole, that I can usually bring myself out of it by lowering my altitude. Might just be a coincidence, but it does seem to work most of the time.

Sometimes if you quit flying it helps as well. It may take I couple of minutes to work. You can also try, as long as you are still on land, the "go here" button off the pie menu. It may take a few seconds as well to work.

This has happened to me a handful of times. I have found that if I'm really stuck (cant stop flying or change altitude) I can still use teleport home to escape it.

Oh, so _that's_ what a "black hole" is. I've encountered the term in the forums before but wasn't sure what was meant by it.
The basic cause of a "black hole" is an unresponsive sim or a breakdown in network communication with the sim. The sim may or may not come back... depending on the root cause of the problem, however if it lasts for more than about 60 seconds then it's a lost cause and will require a relogin.
