Ati just released there new set of drivers with full support for Open GL 3.0 and its a godsend for me...jump myperformance up by a bit in SL..so thought i would mention it to anyone needing new drivers.

im currently useing them..such a better jump than the 8.12 set...still lil buggy but they run SL better, for me at least. Suppose alot has to do with your hardware too. but in all i would reccomend the update

Oh, it just made things worse.

SL hasn't been known to keep up with ATI drivers very well. I installed the most recent and SL won't even make it past the login screen before crashing. It's funny, all other programs work great, but SL has been the only one to crash every single time.
