A friend told me, that when I send him an offline IM he can see my e-mail adress. I am not happy with that!! How can I change that?

he cant.

when you get an IM as offliner by email, the from address is an email address, right... but its not the one the sender has in his/her profile, its some generated thingie that, when used to reply to the offliner, leads to the senders IM window.

Thats what I always thought, but he could tell me my email adress: .......@yahoo.com :(. That was a bit of a shock for me. I never thought some one could.

So I am really puzzeled and worried.

now that puzzles me as well.
when i get an offliner, the sending address is some cryptical long balderdash@im.agni.lindenlab.com, and if i reply the sending address on the other end is a similar construct...

I think it was when I got his offline IM in my email inbox and I reply it from my email, so not in world. But still I thought it was not possible.

Possibly you replied to an IM offline and forgot to edit out your signature?

when you hit reply and do not erase the entire message that was sent to you from sl to your email, it is listed in there.

You used a Yahoo Email account. When responding to IMs by Email, most of the Email body will be included. Yahoo, like Apple, likes to advertise by piggybacking their own messages on the bottoms of Emails. ("Sent from my iPhone", anyone?) So that's probably how it's getting through. (>_<;)

This isn't a problem with Gmail and other services if you reply and delete everything from the body except for the direct message you're sending in response. (^_^)y

Yep, I agree with this analysis. I use Gmail to respond to IMs all the time, and as long as I delete *everything* in the body before typing in my reply, it arrives in world looking exactly like an IM sent in world - no additional information.

Other services, however, include headers and such in the reply that you cannot edit out, which can expose your email address when you use email to respond to IMs.

If you have an alt you can send yourself messages with your alt to test it out.

I prefer to use http://zonkster.com to answer offline IMs, I always try to remember to ask the person to confirm they got my msg, responding offline IMs by email can't be trusted to always work and often there won't be any sign it failed

Oh, another thing you can do is create a separate email account that you only use for SL, like Avatar.Name@gmail.com. Then set your SL emails to go there. That way, even if you do accidentally reveal your email address in an IM response, you haven't given out any RL information.

^^ This. (^_^)

Though, I remember dealing with someone in a VERY large group I'm in. She had used her business Email, had notices to Email on, and activated her out-of-office assistant. (=_=)

So when I sent class announcements; I got Emails directly back from her telling me her Email address, cell phone number, her backup contact Email and phone, and the location she was at for vacation... Not so smart, no? Even in sending her an IM to notify her of this mistake, her autoresponder fed me the same info. (=_=)y

good suggestion.

another alternative is to never reply directly from your email.

just logon to sl, click on your friend's profile and send them an im from within secondlife.
