I just made my account and attempted to start playing, but have been completely unable to load any environments. I log in, see an empty void, and things slowly start to appear - and after about 10 minutes of waiting, at which point I can usually see the ocean, my name, and some scattered landmass, it just disconnects me. I've checked my statistics and I'm getting pings of 4500, which I don't understand since I have a pretty fast connection can play other (much more intensive) online games with no problems. I've never even seen an avatar, it's never gotten that far.

I'm running an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 ghz CPU, an Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M, and 2 gigs of RAM.

I tried turning all the graphical settings down, raising the bandwidth cap and cache, turning off every antivirus and firewall I have, and running virus scans. Nothing can make it run.

are you using a wireless connection? If so try a wired one. Also reboot your modem and/or router.

What kind of internet service is it, DSL, cable, satellite, or what?

You might try seeing if this url can help: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Packet_Loss .

A high ping time indicates it's some network problem. I know you said you have a pretty fast connection but you might call your ISP anyway to see if there's a bottleneck between them and you. You might also try going to this site and running a few tests......especially the test site in San Francisco.

http://www.speedtest.net/

Other games playing without any apparent problem is not a good comparison. Those other games that are, as you say, much more intensive reside mainly on your computer.......not so with SL. Everything but your viewer is stored on Linden Lab servers and all the video, chat, scripts (everything you see and experience) has to be downloaded to you every time you do anything at all in SL......including just standing in one spot and panning your camera. I don't know of any publically available program that is anywhere near as intensive CPU and GPU wise as SL.

You said you bypassed your router..........did you also reboot your modem?

I'm running off my college's internet, so I can't really reset the modem myself. I can try and call the IT center when they're next open and see if there's something wrong on their end.

I ran the speedtest against San Francisco, and got 3232 kb/s download and 3134 kb/s upload, with a 184 ping.

If you are on a college network I'm surprised you can even into SL at all. With as much bandwidth as SL requires most networks like colleges and other public networks won't even allow programs like SL to get outside the network.

But, talk to your IT people.
