Half of my image uploads fail, with different error number codes.
I also do not get refunded the cost of the upload when it fails.

I have tried various formats but it has failed with each type.

Is this a bug?
Is there a reference for the error codes?

thanks,
fen

I don't have the answers you seek, but I do have questions.

Have you (any of you) successfully uploaded an image whose path on your system has spaces in one or more directory names? Specifically the Desktop, which is where I like to temporarily store things to upload. I can't seem to get an upload from there to work -ever-.

And a related observation regarding downloads -- tried to download the world map the other day, yes, to my desktop, and it failed. Tried again to a no-spaces directory, and it worked.

Sorry, there is no public error code reference, but you really shouldn't need one: we should be throwing up a dialog box explaining what happened in English. Oops!

It sounds like there are at least three other bugs afoot here:

1. Failed uploads shouldn't cost you anything. I'm not sure about the status of this bug, but I've definately seen it in our bug tracking system.

2. I'll try to verify the "can't have spaces in path names" problem. (Nice detective work, Shebang!)

3. Feniks, if you have an image that you are consistently unable up upload, please email it to me (aarony@lindenlab.com) and I'll try to track down the problem. Also, please include the name and version of the program you're using to create the images.

Thanks!

upload from spacey directory :)
12-29-2002 07:13
Hiya Shebang -- I upload textures from directories with spaces in the name with no problem. My textures are stored in subdirectories of my 'My Documents' folder, and all my subdirectories have spaces in their names. I have Windows XP home edition.

Ok, must just be me then (so what else is new? LOL)

I lost $40 or $50 last night trying to upload an image. Tried from the desktop, then from a directory without spaces, then I converted the image from bmp to jpg and tried, then I logged off, back on and tried again -- can't honestly remember if there was a 5th attempt or not.

Towards the end of the evening, I attempting uploading a completely different image, and it uploaded cleanly the first try.

Oh, just remembered, there WAS a 5th try on the first image. I went back to the bmp in the no-spaces directory and resaved it using Photoshop (I normally use Paint Shop Pro) to see if that would do the trick. It didn't.

With regards to TGA's -- something interesting that I've noticed -- if I save them using PS or PSP, they're X kb in size. Exact same image saved using a really old version of MGI PhotoSuite is X+Y kb. The PS & PSP ones (almost?) always fail to upload correcty for me. The MGI ones (almost?) always upload correctly.

[ Is there any chance of getting a Research Grant so I could spend some time (and money!) trying various pixel sizes in the different graphics programs I have and put together some really good notes on which ones uploaded and which ones failed... ? ]

I have not had any more failures since I've been keeping my images small and within the mentioned specs. I use Adobe 6 for all my images and have had success with different types of images. Not that I upload much. It does sometimes it takes awhile for the image to upload.

Shebang, what error codes do you get? Try sending your failed images to aaron Linden. No waiting for grants...

Would definitely be wonderful if there was some way to preview a texture in world and then paying for its use if it looks ok.

Imagine a trial period of time and if not purchased before expiration then it deletes.

Could also extend that to between users for purchasing textures from each other.

I have no idea if these is even feasible but its nice to ramble. =0)

No pay for yucky textures!
12-31-2002 12:45
Yup I agree -- no pay for yucky textures.

Shebang, I should have said, that whereas most of my texture uploads have been successful, I've had some that weren't -- and I had to pay too. Also, I've uploaded 1 bmp and all the rest jpgs.

maybe incoorporate this idea....

you upload a texture, and if you dont like it, and within a period of time after the upload you delete all instances of it you get credited back the $. But this would not be good for people that upload in big bulk sessions like say 50 textures at a time.Hard to go through each texture within a period of time.

Then maybe something that detects the first time a texture is used, then the time limit to get credit for it starts then.

re: The image that cost me $50 the other night and never did get uploaded successfully

I was chatting with bp last night, and he asked what error code I was getting. I'd forgotten, so I decided to splurge and give up another $10 to get that code.

I didn't get the code.

Instead I actually got the texture to upload! yay =)

Exact same image as the night it wouldn't upload, and it hadn't been edited or even opened in the interim.

Weird, eh?

Please send images
01-02-2003 12:02
PLEASE send your images that won't upload to me! (aarony@lindenlab.com). If you do, I may be able to get your upload fees refunded.

Here's a key to some error codes to help you make sense of the problems you're having:

-1 Asset request failed
-2 Invalid asset request
-3 File does not exist
-4 Asset not in database
-39 File ended earlier than expected
-42 Cannot open file
-43 File not found
-23016 TCP timeout (your network is being slow or the server isn't responding).
-23017 Circuit gone (your connection to the server has been lost)

I don't expect that these will all make sense (yes, -3 is different from -43, but not in ways that you should care about). The important thing is to distinguish between problems with your connection (the last two codes) and the rest.

In any case, send me email with the error code (if you see one in the log), the name and version number of the program you used to save the image file, and (of course) the image file itself. Also, include the full path of the file you're trying to upload (eg, "C:\my folder\my images\redwagon.jpg";) and (if you're using Win2000/NT/XP) the kind of account you're using (administrator or limited).

I really want to nail these problems, but I need specific examples to work with!

Thanks for your help!
