This doesn't sound like a viewer problem - going back to an older version probably won't help. Are there any other sim stats that go south at the same time that the ping spikes? If so, it could be a problem with the sim instead of your connection to it.

The ping sim stat is sorta like the time it takes for the software on your PC to talk to the sim software running at LL.

If you do ping on the command line, outside SL, you'll see how long it takes to get from your PC to the OS software running at LL...
- check Help->About Second Life and find the sim IP address, near the top of the window
- click the windows Start button -> Run... -> cmd.exe
- in the cmd window, type 'ping -t ' (without the quotes) then the IP address of the sim

Just leave this running in the background as you SL. When you notice the ping sim go thru the roof, switch back and watch the ping -t. If it's also showing a spike, there's some network problem between you and LL. If it's not showing the spike, it's probably a problem on the sim.

edit: 200ms is normal? That's over 2 times what I normally see. What country are you in? Are you using wireless at home?

Wireless is probably the problem. The solutions are to a) live with it, b) get a hardwired connection or c) get better wireless gear.

You can try powering down _all_ your computer gear, including the modem & router and all that, for 5 minutes or so but that doesn't always help.

There may be bandwidth preferences you can tweak to make wireless less of a pain but somebody else will have to speak to that...

It could be that you have new neighbors that are using their microwave oven more than the old neighbors. Wireless is a fickle thing.

I'd still try powering off all your gear for a few minutes.

With SL, saying you have wireless, even if it was working fine before, is like saying you haven't yet checked that your computer is plugged in.

Power everything off for a few minutes and see if that helps.
