So my Radeon 9500 has gone from locking up repeatedly to crashing my system repeatedly.

99% of my Radeon problems happen with SL.

So rather than waste my time dealing with this anymore, I am going to buy a reasonably priced vid card replacement. I am not looking to spend more than $100 really as I'll prolly build a new machine in 6 months or so.

My machine-
Asus A7V8X mb
Athlon 3200 CPU, clocked down to 2/3 speed since the mb can't handle the bus speed at max ;)
1 gig pc3200 ram

Can anyone please suggest a non-ATI vid card that would be a good fit? Thanks!

Please? The most I can find so far is the GeForce 5700... is this a good choice? Something else?

I started SL with Radeon 9000 but finally went to the GeForce 5600 and it worked great, I dont know about the 5700 but it should work well too. I just upgraded to the 6800 and I love it

Thanks!

6800 = $300ish, 5700 = < $100. I checked out the benchmarks... 5700 should be a little bit of an upgrade, and I am anxious to get rid of my Radeon now.

Anyone else can back this recommendation? Have other opinions? I would like a few views if possible.

I can endorse the 6800 family too - got one of the very early Ultras which has worked fine since a BIOS update to it.
A 6800 should do you for a while in terms of performance too - I got the Ultra as it'll probably do me for a couple of years of "gamer" level speeds.

I had to ditch my Radeon 9800 :(
Bought a GeForce 6800 and it rocks. If your upgrading yr comp in 6 months it would make sense to get a good card now.

I am running this same vid and mobo Hiro. You will be fine and happy to be out of ATI hell.

Just got the 5700LE with 256M mem last night (since my earilier ge4 had burned out and my ge2 ultra wasnt cutting it)

With all options on max in SL, i still get 9 FPS in uncrowded areas, thats everything on max and view distance at 256m. So i can tweak it down if i want to go to busy or crowded places.

It makes local lighting really worth having on though.

ordered the 5700 LE - right at my price range - $94

I'm not getting better because I'll likely completely rebuild my PC in 6 months, and keep the old one as a server or something, heheh...

Thanks for all your advice! Next week I shall be ATI FREE!!! YAYYY!

Good call on the 5700. I was recently researching an nvidia replacement for my dying Radeon 9700 Pro and that's the one I was looking at getting - until I decided to get a whole new machine and go PCI-express. My Geforce 6600 GT is on the way, as is my new computer. I will soon join the ATI-free club as well... ahh freedom at last from bad drivers / compatibility issues!

Me too, and I hope to SLI a couple of these 6600 GT cards together as well. It's unexplored territory though, so if it works I'll treat it as a bonus. Just one card alone should be nice enough.

Actually, now is not the best time to buy a $200+ video card - if you're planning a future computer upgrade in 6 months. In 6 months, you'll be upgrading to a mainboard with a PCI-express slot for video, and you'll want a PCIe card to go with it. PCIe is an upgrade from AGP.

And BTX machine form-factor should be coming on shortly...
And SATA & DDR2 are likely to become broader-use...
So on and so forth... ;)

This is why I'm made my last big upgrade blast for a while - should be good for a couple of years while all the standards restandardise themselves, then grab a whole new machine to do it all over again....

Hiro, Since I have an ATI RADEON 9200, which I bought *specifically to play this game* I really have to wonder, if so many players are reporting crashes and lock-ups, the Second Life recommendations for hardware compatible with their game say this:

"6. What computer hardware do I need to live a Second Life?
Current minimum computer specifications are:
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce 2 (32MB RAM) or higher, or ATI Radeon 8500 (32MB RAM) or higher (laptop users: see #8 below for more information)
Computer: 800MHZ or higher, 256MB RAM or more
OS: Windows XP/2000
Internet Connection: Broadband (DSL/Cable Modem/LAN)
DirectX 8 or 9"

It's irresponsible to go on publishing that ATI Radeo 8500 or higher is acceptable with this game, if it is not.

Or is your experience isolated?

ATI RADEON is usually less expensive in stores than Nvidia Geforce 2 or higher, that's been my experience.

Why should I go out and spent $100 on a brand-new graphics card when I just bought a brand-new graphics card *to play this game with the specs that they said you require*? This is what baffles me.
