Okay - I have really tried to fix this and nobody seems to be able to help me. From what I can tell, I have two issues here. I will WORSHIP you if you can help.
First Issue - Just logging in. I dowloaded the upgrade. Since then, I have noticed a script running and staying open when I was In World. When I closed the script, sl crashes. Ok... so I leave the script open... no problem. A day later... I go to log in ... Detecting HW - Gathering HW - then flickering "sending to alternative server. Try 1..." and it disappears. So ... I uninstall and reinstall... I can get in to sl if I choose from the installation "start sl now". After I log out... same as above.
Second Issue - I have to fess up... I was messing aroung with the Debug options... Not sure if this has anything to do with it... Okay so now I'm InWorld and I hav beacons on everyhing I touch or that moves. All different colors. Turned them off, but... Everthig is still glowing.
Please... help....

I'm having the issues with beacons (ty, was looking for a word for it). I've finally dropped all graphics to the lowest settings and that didn't fix it.
I can run other games that are considered much higher end graphics just fine. Is this an ATI issue? It was fine before the update. I think we need an emergency patch or something.

You may want to uninstall SL completely, this isn't just clicking on uninstall, it means deleting all folders associated with SL, you can find folders in C:/Documents and Settings/<your system login name>/Application Data/Secondlife... (you may have to select 'show hidden folders' to find this.
Run a registry cleaner.
Reinstall a fresh copy of SL.
This clears any junk and spurous links to SL and old files such as DLL's. When you login SL after that, you will find you are treated like a newb, but setup your client again to your favourite settings and it should run quicker with less issues.
Consider installing the latest updated .NET Framework platform as well. Version 3 or 3.5 will aid stability issues, along with the latest GC drivers.

Having re-read your post, check to see that Java (especially the server version) isn't trying to load with SL. Alternatively, you may have a exploit, such as a keylogger, or trojan trying to redirect your connection. Check the SL shortcut, right hand click it, properties and look at the first line, run the cursor along the text and make sure there is nothing added that would indicate a server connection, other than the lauguage choice switch ending with 'us' (English, assuming that is your chosen language). Check in the Exceptions tab of the OS (Windows) Firewall (Control Panel, firewall icon, exceptions tab), that only SecondLife.exe and SLVoice.exe and or SLVoiceClient.exe are checked. Nothing else other than Remote Services (which you probably don't need anyway unless you are a network admin), is selected. When Second Life IS running, use Ctrl+Alt+Del and start task manager and see what applications and or processes are running. I'm not suggesting you arbitrarily start tuning off processes, but note which ones are running, that don't run when using SL. Some exploits use System services, others are listed as Owner and are not native OS programmes. Having written down the names of the services, use Google to search for them and check what they maybe. Get a RootKit ( http://www.grisoft.com/ww.811.ndi-62200) and run that. Hope it works for you.

Hi there!
I just wanted to come back and be a bit more clear on my post. The driver updates did fix the graphical nightmare issue that I had. Unfortunately that was just the tip of the iceberg.
I can typically only be ingame in a crowded region for about 30 to 60 seconds before I lose it completely. Nothing has fixed this yet.

Thank you all for trying to help me... I am still unable to access the program once I log off. Every time I log off, I click on sl... it accesses the database and give me a note in the crash log saying "Sending to alternate server. try 1..." it flashes but does not send a crash report. Still uninstalling and installing the program every log in. Allowed it through the firewall... No java running... Uninstalled all the junk - yahoo - everything else was there when I bought the computer... (1month ago)

Hi Acadia, welcome to the forums. Sorry the occasion is so sad, and I really hope you make it inworld, since you're named after one of my favorite RL parks in the entire world! So, two things. 1. RE: Crashing on login, no log sent: there is a fix "pending" for this: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-5533I'm told that means the fix is in QA (testing). 2. RE: Crashing: You might try a really old client, just to see if that makes a difference. I'd recommend trying the Nicholaz viewer, just because it's incredibly stable, pre-windlight, based on 1.18. http://nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com/2007/12/release-bleeding-edge-be-v.htmlFollow the install instructions - it is an open source version of SL's viewer, with a lot of bug fixes applied. .

Still Stumped
04-11-2008 13:37
thank your for the two tips. I tried the instructions from NIK, but that didn't work.
The primary issue is this: If I install the software (doesn't matter which version) and click yes to launch the application following the installation, all is well.
If I click no, then try to launch, it crashes.
Has anybody seen this before? Hopefully the fix pending will fix this... We've tried all suggestions posted here.
Thank you, AG

For "fun" of it , i tried debug with showactivespeakers on (voice on) , hello instant crash on login 4 of 4 attempts, but then again my soundcard never liked streaming audio in SL be it media, parcel or voice -.-;.
Yes you can see who use voice without being on it, but it seems SL dont like that very much :n
