(scroll to bottom for issue, I just had to vent a bit) When I log into Second Life every day (well pretty close) the first thing I do is hit Ctrl-Alt-6 (disable fog) and sometimes Alt-Shift-3 (dont render Trees)
Trees I dont mind so much unless I'm in the middle of Darkwood at which point my more pitiful machine drops to sub 1fps trying to download and render all those alphaed leaves.
Fog on the otherhand... have hated it in every game I've played. SL is no exception. (Fog on an airless moon in... Mechwarrior 2 was it?... particularly set me off.) Perhaps in LA you can start to see haze at 40 Meters but in most places that kind of smog is just totally unknown. Currently I'm in Wyoming and 2 or 3 miles out I can barely see haze over the mountains. Thats the length of the entire world in SL currently.
I understand the purpose, the ground and sky and the edge of my draw distance do meet in a rather sharp clash when I turn it off but I *much* prefer that to wandering around in a Maine fog permanently.
Down to brass tacks: Ctrl-Alt-6 used to completely disable fog. Now it only partially does. It still disables over Land and Water at any distance but over prims its still there. Normal view or any option chosen with the scroll-wheel has full fog over prims but if I Alt-Zoom around sometimes its there sometimes not... especially if I rotate. It seems it might only exist directly in front of me? first noticed on GF2 32M, not at home to try on FX5700 but ran into ATI and FX5600 users in game who could see the same effects

i've found the fog can actually look quite realistic and natural at 512 draw distance...

Well, for one thing you aren't supposed to be able to see air.

I don't get what your talking about, I see no extra fog that wasn't there before. *shrug*
