Works great. 3 machines here with it. No troubles on any, aside from SL being its usual crash-prone self.

well, I just upgraded my system to Vista 64 and I am not pleased. SL was crashing about every 15 minutes, so I ended up wiping the drives and reloading everything again. now with the latest drivers it hasn't crashed. (yet)
But the performance is horrible. I have an EVga SLI MB and a pair of SLI'ed GTX260's. On XP (32) i was averaging a frame rate of 45 to 60 in most pkaces and it actually exceeded 100 at times. With Vista (64) it's about 6 to 10. SL is the only place I'm having problems. I nenchmarked the system on 3dmark advantage and was over 20k, a good 3k improvement over my xp. The XP was OC'ed and tuned, the Vista was default settings, so I know I can get more. If anyone has any hints as to why vista is running sl so poorly, I'd sure like to hear them |

If anyone has any hints as to why vista is running sl so poorly, I'd sure like to hear them If your current Vista64 setup is turning in good 3D benchmark scores and performing badly in SL, I'd take a good, hard look at the graphics drivers. It may well be that, given many company's reluctance to adequately support 64-bit environments, it may have a bad OpenGL implementation. You can verify this by downloading and running an OpenGL-based benchmark program (most 3D benchmarking programs ONLY test DirectX performance). _____________________

Thanks, I'll give that a try.
I did notice something strange this morning though. ever since I went to Visat, when I open SL i start getting static ( an anoying poping sound). This mornign I logged on and it was not there and my frame rate was back up to the 30 to 45 range. everything seemed to be working well and then the static started again and my frame rates dropped to under 10. I' wondering if this might be related to SL's wonderful voice servers somehow. OK, this is worse than I thought. Not sure what's going on. I tried to run a video in wm player, and it was fine til I full screened it. then I started getting that clicking sound and it slowed to about a frame a second. That's not open GL, it's direct x, right? |

Well, I guess I had a network issue that was affecting the video. It was on another pc. DL'ed new driver and that's all working fine.
Did an open gl benchmark (FurMark) and scored a 6500. Looking at the comparative table, the average for the GTX260 is around 3300, so it looks like my system is OK. The only problem is, SL still runs very slow. I've tried the standard viewer and the latest RC, same results. This is very frustrating because everything but SL is sooooo much faster and just works better with the Vista 64 bit. I'm finally able to utilize the hardware I have. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

so, I just went back to XP 32 (put vista on new drives so I could put old ones back in if I needed to) and the frame rate where I was getting 9.5 with vista is >70 with xp. Same hardware, so it has to be a combination of drivers and viewer. oh well, I'll wait a while and try it again.

Did you remember to turn off Aero? It's on by default if you've got the hardware for it, which you do. It's known to cause problems for SL and other 3D apps. Usually, it causes a crash, not just a slowdown, but anything is possible.
Also, did you make sure to find the 64-bit versions of all drivers you're using? If neither of those suggestions does the trick, then I'm stumped. Sorry. _____________________

It's not Vista itself as I get better performance with Vista 64 over XP32. I have an Intel Q6600 with 4gig memory and an 8800GTX.

I have a Q9450 and 6 gig of SLI certified memory plus the 2 SLI'ed GTX260's. This system should be uber fast in sl because it's already pretty fast with XP 32. And, like I said, it very fast in everything but SL. Oh well, I'll check for new drivers in a week or so and also see if they have a new RC out and try it again |

I tried SLI with my 8800GTXs and it blew chunks with slideshow framerates. _____________________

Mileage seems to vary greatly on that, from machine to machine. I get about a 30% boost to FPS in SL with SLI enabled. Like you, I'm using 8800GTX's. I suspect the motherboard and its drivers likely have a lot to do with it, but I don't know for sure. _____________________

My experience with SLI and XP 32 has been great. Like I said, average 45 to 6o fps with many instances of > 100. It was about half that before I added the second card.

OK, found some new beta drivers put out by Nvidia and not eVga. The release notes on them said they fixed some bugs with open gl.
I installed them this morning and it fixed my problems. No more clicking static as soon as I open the SL viewer and the FPS are up to an acceptable level. Stll not as good as my XP 32 was doing, but definitely usable. I also downloaded the new RC viewer, but that by itself didn't fix it. So, now I can say that Vista 64 works just fine with SL ![]() |
