Hiya! Second life has made a Cache 1.4 gigabytes in size!
You should put that on the Faq! Geez. I thought I had a virus, because my free space kept getting smaller and smaller. I had no idea where the gigabyte I freed by deleting Ultima Online went, untill I found the Second Life files.
So can I delete this Cache? And is there some way to make sure that it doesn't get this big again?
My hard drive isn't very large, and I have almost no space left. I've had to delete around 600-800 megabytes of stuff just to keep up with the space demands that grow every time I play on SL.
Oh btw. HURRY!

I dump my cache quite often. Does not seem to cause any harm, in fact, it seems to speed things up if it gets too big.

I think you can set cache size in "Preferences" in the "edit" menu, if my memory serves me.

In an age where disks go from 40 to 200 gigs, why should one gig be such a problem to you? When I run out of space I can free up multiple gigs just by emptying the recycle bin and temporary files...

One gig is a problem because it is to some people who do have a smaller hard disk ..and dont want/cant upgrade to a bigger hard disk , thats why not everyone has/wants the lastest and greatest equipment.

My PC is like 2 years old man Its pretty hard for a normal user to fill up a modern hard drive. I do have my 40 gig HD pretty full but only because I am an avid pirate with a folder full of game ISOs and I have no patience to burn them. If I burned every game I downloaded I would have half of my HD free. Besides HDs are cheaper than dirt nowadays. Back in the day I had to walk through the snow, uphill both ways, to get a 40 meg HD. And I LIKED it. Heh come to think of it when I was a kid my schools computer had NO hard disk, and only 512k of memory, which it took ages to count. It had two 5 1/4 floppy drives because one had to contain the system disk all day long And my spectrum had only 48k of ram. And I'm sure somebody will mention punch cards. Or the abacus. Bleh

My cache is usually quite a few magnitudes higher than what my preference is. As far as my drive being filled, well I would be quite happy if I could move the cache somewhere besides my system partition. I have my drive partitioned to all heck and back (Due to speed issues and effiiciency due to the block size.). It troubles me a bit when SL's cache grows large enough that it completely takes over the available space. I end up keep having to increase and increase the size of the partition, which gets old. As far as larger drives, yeah, I would love to pick up a new 250gig'er or something. But, unfortunately I am not rich. Actually, I am rather broke non-stop (The joys of having children and being the sole provider). Besides, I am sure that if I did have a 250 gig drive that it too would be at 99% non-stop also.... However, I suppose I could start using that box of floppy's and back up my cache onto them.. If I swap disks fast enough, maybe it will work LOL.

This was explained before by a Linden.
You cache proper is made up of the data.xxx, index.xxx, and xxx.cached_inventory. (xxx symbolizes any text) The data file is the file whose size is set in the prefereces. These files you should not delete.
Bodypart, clothing and wav files also get stored here and they are not governed by preferences, so they build up. They can be deleted any time to free up space.

Okay as long as I can delete most of it. It usually only grows by about 10-100 megs each time I play SL so that's not too bad. I have a six gig drive and a two gig secondary drive, and they're usually both very full. I have to keep the DirectX SDK, along with Visual Studio on my C: drive and along with the OS there is usually only about 2 gigs left afterwards. If I could afford one I'd like a larger drive, I'm saving up for one now, but in the mean time SL will have to shrink a bit.

I am finding then when my game crashes, SL makes a new SET of these files - I have my cache set to 512 meg - but when i restart the game - NEW cache file! i was in a similar state as rylee wondering why i was losing so much drive space. i assumed that it was ok to delete them as I had installed the game on seperate machines and never needed these files...so i smoked em! And low and behold - all was fine. I think LL needs to let folks know that when they crash they can expect big files to accrue. I was up to 4.5gigs of cache before i noticed

What is the consensus here? Can I nuke the cache? I noticed last night that my available space was being soaked up like an orange juice spill in a paper towel factory.

I picked up a 180GB drive for $60 the the other day, after rebates. But then, I do a lot of video editing and TV program storage, so all my drives are usually close to full, but easy to empty. Just chuck a few Simpsons episodes... But I play Second Life on my slide rule. Hey... Anyone have the latest graphics drivers for a Teledyne POST Versalog II (model 1460 44CA-60J)?

First off I'm not saying that just because I can afford something it is affordable. But a sort of heads up for people running on 8 gigs (yuk), 40gig HD is a *very* reasonable upgrade (size wise) that can be found for under $50 - $60 including shipping (but not tax) at a lot of online retailers. Thats without rebates required.
And overflowing cache is a known issue on the list of things to be worked on.
