frequent freezes when typing after DSL upgrade

This is weird. Just switched from slowish DSL (1.3 mbps) to faster DSL (4 mbps). Everything works, things rez a bit quicker, I think, BUT -- now the program frequently freezes for 10-20 seconds (then comes back to life and runs fine). and always right as I send a message, either chat or IM.

Any ideas?

SL runs fine on a laptop (XP) with the new DSL service but is behaving as described above on a box with an Intel 2.4 gig Intel Celeron processor and a GE Force 7800 Series video card in the AGP slot. 2 gigs of memory. Win2K is the OS.
