This is the first time I've ran across this. Mandatory updating. I have version 1.19, and CAN NOT use any graphic viewer higher than that due to internet and computer restrictions.
Third party viewers can still log in, and function, so why am I kicked out of the log in screen simply because I have an outdated viewer? This started happening as of the last update.
Could this be changed to allow anyone to log in using outdated clients?
(( BTW if I can not log in before 12/29/08 using 1.19, some one in LL owes me around $L120,000 ))

From: Shippou Oud I have version 1.19, and CAN NOT use any graphic viewer higher than that due to internet and computer restrictions. I'm not sure why you can't log in with 1.19. There's been nothing on the blog or the status page about 1.20+ now being a requirement, as far as I know. But regardless, your stated reason for sticking with 1.19 puzzles me. What "restriction" does your Internet connection have that would prevent you from using a newer viewer? As for the "computer restrictions" part, I assume you're trying to avoid Windlight. You do know you can just turn WL off if you don't want to use it, right? Simply disable atmospheric shaders in Preferences, lower a few settings, and the WL viewers behave exactly the same as the non-WL ones. I realize the anti-establishment rumor mill never wants to accept that answer, but that doesn't make it less true. Don't listen to those people. From: Shippou Oud This started happening as of the last update. What update? The main viewer hasn't been updated since October. Are you perhaps trying to use an older release candidate? If so, then that's the cause of your problem. A new release candidate (1.22 RC4) came out today, and it is a required update. Older main viewers should still work, though. For an archive of main viewer downloads, going all the way back to 1.15, see http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions . You can grab the 1.19 main viewer from there, if you really want it. You'll also find on that page a link to instructions for how to make even older unsupported viewers connect to the grid. I've never done it, but it looks very easy to do. If I'm reading right, it's just a matter of adding a parameter to the command line, a 2-second edit.

I believe there have been security updates since the 1.19 viewer was released.
You can login using any older viewer by using the -channel command. add:
-channel "2old4u"
to the "target" field of the shortcut to your SL viewer, and it'll login without forcing the upgrade.
!HOWEVER!
You will be running a viewer WITHOUT the security patches LL thought were important enough to make you upgrade!
I believe some of these involve streaming media. If you're going to use an older viewer, disable straming media. There may be other issues I'm not aware of. If you run an out of date viewer, you're doing so at your own risk. Don't blame me when some cyberpunk steals your face.

Yes I am running 1.19 ... why you ask?
My laptop instantly crashes on login with any newer viewer.
I am locked out, every time I log in I get the option to update, or quit, nothing else.

What are your laptop's specs? Sounds like you've got a driver issue.
Also, when was the last time you tried a newer viewer? A lot of bugs have been squashed in the last few updates. It's entirely likely that whatever was causing your crashing could have been fixed.
Also, when you tried, did you disable atmospheric shaders BEFORE you logged in? If not, that's definitely something you should try. Depending on what graphics card you've got, there are some other things you should do as well, before the first login.
In any case, did you try following the instructions for how to log in with an older viewer?
